An apology from David Letterman was good enough for Sarah Palin - but not for protesters who demanded the late night host's dismissal Tuesday at a Broadway demonstration.
"Fire Dave! Fire Dave!" the crowd of about 50 protesters chanted as Letterman fans filtered into the Ed Sullivan Theater for the show's taping.
"I hope to have him see the light," said demonstrator Josephine Sarnok, 59, of Newark. "I think it was over the line."
BettyJean Kling, 61, accused Letterman of using the Alaska governor's family to boost his ratings. She stood by a large plywood sign with the words "Fire the pervert" spray-painted across the front.

We regularly review programming where our advertising messages appear, and strive to associate our messages with programming that is relevant and entertaining and that speaks to our customers.
That said, it’s important to understand that McDonald’s is not directly involved with network/radio programming decisions. As an advertiser, our role is not to determine what broadcasters should or should not air. That decision belongs to the broadcaster and, ultimately, to the individual viewer. However, we recognize our customers support a diverse view of programming interests. As such, we appreciate you sharing your opinion and have shared it with our Marketing Department where it will be considered for future advertising decisions.
Please be assured that we will continue to search for entertaining, responsible programming for the placement of our commercials.

I totally agree with what you said. I'm guessing that we actually agree on all this.
The point I'm trying to make is that if we make a HUGE stink about the double-standard then maybe we'll start seeing fewer attacks on us and maybe the start of some attacks on them. Some real-life fair and balanced media coverage for a change. :0)

I don’t think we should worry about bland responses from advertisers. If they get enough negative mail, they will react, no doubt about it.
And, aren’t we supposed to be fighting Letterman, not each other?

I have to agree with nautinurse. Did you even notice the protestors were recognized by the media? Volunteering time is Not a bad thing.

In my opinion, the joke got the facts wrong, and wouldn’t have been funny even if it got them right. Then his non-apology got him in hot water.
He should have legitimately apologized, or at least given a non-sarcastic one. He shouldn’t lose his job over that error. the PC issue is whether he should apologize over a joke that was wrong on its face, and wrong in interpretation. He did so (eventually), and Palin accepted it, so it’s time to move on. Incidentally, even if she didn’t accept it, I would believe it’s time to move on once an “official, for real” apology is made.
So I respectfully dissent from the majority opinion on FR as regards this issue.
