David Letterman apologized tonight for a slanderous sexually degrading joke he told last week about Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's 14-year-old daughter getting "knocked up" by New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez during the seventh inning of a game attended by the governor and her daughter, yet he failed to apologize for a joke the following night in which he insinuated the 14-year-old girl was a prostitute--indicting himself in the process.
The relevant portion of Letterman's apology:
But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. Theres no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, cant be defended. The next day, people are outraged. Theyre angry at me because they said, How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game? And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani...
So, taking him at his word, the very next day Letterman learns the 14-year-old daughter was in town with her mother, not the 18-year-old. So what does Letterman do that night? He makes a joke calling the in town daughter a prostitute:
....The toughest part of her visit was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter.
Literally right before that 'joke', Letterman made a joke about Palin and Rudy Guiliani attending the Yankees game and being seated in the 'far, far right field.
Letterman makes the focus of his apology his failure to get across his intent that he was joking about the 18-year-old daughter getting 'knocked up' not the 14-year-old:
...Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, Oh, boy, now Im beginning to understand what the problem is here. Its the perception rather than the intent. It doesnt make any difference what my intent was, its the perception....
Letterman only apologizes for the one joke about Willow getting "knocked up", yet ignores the Willow-as-prostitute joke that by his own admissions he would have known explicitly was about her.

The only thing he’s sorry about is how people took his “joke”... he’s not sorry he delivered it.
Am I the only one wondering why A-Rod hasn’t expressed a little outrage of his own in HIS name being used in this mess? Or, have I missed it?
He needs to be sorry of how he views women. Any woman. No matter the age.
And yet...his ratings will spike again, tonight.
Letterman is desperate to stop the protest tomorrow in front of the Ed Sullivan Theater along with sponsors dropping from his show.
What a pitiful little man . . . 62 years old, famous, a multimillionaire, college graduate . . .and no class
He’s sorry we “misunderstood” his “joke”, not that he told it.
I’ve been wondering the same thing.
Or Major League Baseball for that matter........
Of course, mlb.com now uses Olberman as one of their bloggers, so perhaps it’s understandable.
He’s only sorry because CBS executives must be on his sorry A** for making such a horrible, terrible attempt at humor. He’s about as sorry as yesterday’s dirty diapers. As a parent, I’m still angry. How would he like it if some other male celebrity made a joke about someone kidnapping & raping his son. He wouldn’t like it.
Sorry David. It’s not enough. We want blood. You will have to provide it ~ but first, invite in some of your “defenders” and ask them to join you.(Just joking ~ Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha)
I hope he dies a very lonely man.
> He needs to be sorry of how he views women. Any woman. No matter the age.
He actually needs to lose his job. “Sorry” isn’t a punishment, and it certainly isn’t an adequate outcome for making sick jokes about child rape on international TV.
He needs to leave our living rooms forever. He’s abused his privilege and now he needs to go.
Letterman’s only hope is to plead insanity.
I wondered the same thing he should have blasted Letterman for it. now if he was a black fella the usual suspects would have been calling for his firing
Okay, that party is over. Time to move on.
Why’s that??? Time to kick him even harder.
Im glad I stopped watching him 10 or 12 years ago. He sucked real bad for a while before I finally gave up so he must really be sucking now!
Dave had the final say as to whether that joke or any of the top ten list was ever said on his show.
He said the joke because he saw a home run against Sarah Palin.
If he was a decent person, he would have said—I’m not saying that joke, period. That is over the line.
But he didn’t. Because he WANTED to say the joke.
His second non-apology is worthless like the first. To say that he did not know ANYONE was at the game with the Governor is a lie, pure and simple. A daughter had to be at the game to make the joke work at all. Even the audience knew that a daughter was at the game with Palin.
So, to him, it was a scream that one of the daughters got knocked up by A-Rod. Whetehr it was the 14 year old or the 18 year old didn’t matter to him, but either one still makes the joke vile and disgusting.
He needs to be Imus-ed by CBS. He has been dead-funny-man- walking for years now.
