US President Barack Obama announced 73 million dollars in aid for impoverished Zimbabwe following talks with Morgan Tsvangirai, the former opposition leader turned reform-seeking prime minister.
Obama, citing concern "about consolidating democracy, human rights and rule of law," cautioned the aid will go to the Zimbabwean people rather than a government where Tsvangirai shares power uneasily with President Robert Mugabe.
The US president hailed Tsvangirai and criticized Mugabe who he said "has not acted oftentimes in the best interest of the Zimbabwean people and has been resistant to the kinds of democratic changes that need to take place."
Standing next to Tsvangirai, Obama expressed his "extraordinary admiration for the courage, the tenacity that the prime minister has shown in navigating through some very difficult political times."
The power-sharing coalition in place since February, Obama added, shows promise and the United States wants to do everything it can "to encourage the kinds of improvement, not only on human rights and rule of law, freedom of the press, and democracy that is so necessary, but also on the economic front."

Isn’t Zimbabwe the country whose government was throwing out white landholders and giving the lands to non-whites?
Their inflation rate is higher than Obozo’s core constituency.
I mean, since we’re just peeing money away, why not?
Maybe it would be a good investment to convert some money to Zimbabwe Dollars... or perhaps an index fund.
I suppose that it could have been worse... It’s not all that hard to imagine Obama giving Zimbabwe 135 billion dollars worth of bearer bonds...
Yes, that was one of the things that Mugabe did.
He had support from the “liberation theology” (Communist) element in the church there when he came to power.
(That is the same element that Barrack Obama’s Pastor Wright is connected with.)
There has not been an election since he came to power that was honest.
He owns an estate in China and has a favorable relationship with China because of his natural resources (Gold, Copper, Diamonds).
He uses food as a weapon to keep people subjected. If you do not support him, you get none and starve.
His “War Veterans” are his Brown Shirts and have killed most of his opposition.
VERY VERY EVIL MAN.
We shouldn’t be giving anyone aid, we’re bankrupt!!!
yeap if he thought he could get away with it he would do it here.
I wonder how many guantanamo inmates will be headed there..
Tsvangirai is an improvement?
>> Obama ... cautioned the aid will go to the Zimbabwean people rather than [the] government ...
Yeah, right. Can he be that naive? (I oughta know - been there, done that: Ghana, Chad, Ivory Coast, Angola, Nigeria, Sudan, etc., etc.)
I really hope that's 73 million Zimbucks which would be about 1/4¢ (actually it looks like $US 200,000. I guess they lopped off some zeros recently.)
Yes ... he’s just “spreading OUR wealth around” to people that also HATE WHITE PEOPLE.
Good God - WHY in hell are we giving ANY money to them at all? And WHERE are we getting another $73M? WE ARE BROKE!
Does anyone know if/where there is a compiled list of foreign aid for 2009?
>> Tsvangirai is an improvement?
Yeah, for a while - then it’s back to business as usual. In the mid ‘70s, that form of government (and the succession of subsequent governments) was explained as the “Big Nig” theory by a French U.N. employee while I was sitting in a bar in N’Djamena, Chad:
After the white man’s “one man, one vote, one time” stage was completed, the “Big Nig” got to run things ‘till someone meaner and nastier overthrew him. He couldn’t leave the country for fear of being overthrown. In the meantime, though, he lived like a king. He also got to steal as much as he could and ship it to his Swiss bank account, hoping that, when the new “Big Nig” arrived, he could escape and live long enough to enjoy it.
(No racial slurs intended; I’m just relating what he said.)
“>> Obama ... cautioned the aid will go to the Zimbabwean people rather than [the] government ... Yeah, right. Can he be that naive?”
Nope, and he isn’t. He’s counting on the American public to be that naïve, and given how he suckered them into making him POTUS, he’s sadly probably right (at least on the left - wade over to DUmmies and KOScum for numerous examples).
