OAKLAND, TN (WMC-TV) - Authorities in Fayette County are investigating a shooting during a home invasion Monday morning near Oakland that left one person dead.

Homeowner Willie Woods said he awoke in the middle of the night to his wife, daughter, and to grandchildren screaming that someone was on their porch. Then, he heard the sound of breaking glass and saw an intruder entering his home. Woods said he tried to warn the intruder off.

"I ordered him not to come into the house," he said.

Fearful about what might happen next, Woods grabbed his pistol, and pulled the trigger when the intruder stepped inside.

"Right through the window - just walked right through the window, so I shot," he said. "I fired about three shots."

The intruder, Anthony Webb, was struck and killed by the bullets.

Webb was Woods neighbor. Woods said he didn't know who he'd shot until after the fact, and he wants a chance to speak with Webb's father, Leroy.

"I'd tell him how sorry I was," Woods said. "I'd let him know - I did that because I had to."

Investigators said the shooting was justified, and refused to file charges. But Woods' cousin, DeLois Harris, disagreed.

"Everybody around here knows Anthony. Anthony doesn't bother anybody," she said. "He had no right to do what he done."

I know and like all my neighbors, but if one of them broke a window in the middle of the night and came in, I’d shoot them too.

Hmmm, no mention of the GED or that the perp was just turning his life around. /s

“Anthony doesn’t bother anybody”

Well, then, he shouldn’t have started bothering people by a late-night break-in.....

DeLois ... your cousin Anthony was breaking and entering - and now he's plant food now ... get over it.

Willie’s house is going to look like “Night of The Living Dead” when the Berkley liberals get wind of this. How dare he defend himself! Should have called the police, they would have responded in 15 minutes or so.....

He had every right to do what he done! ... ebonically speaking of course.

Amazing how many people defend these thugs. Just like Obama, the right to private property does not exist. People can break down doors and windows, assault your wife and kids and if you happen to defend yourself, why that’s just not right!

Fence them off and let them have at it.

Something is wrong with this story: in the Pharmacy shooting the other day made prominent mention of the fact that the deceased perp ENJOYED DRAWING PICHURES [sic], and that he had joined the football team.

So maybe they forgot to mention that the intentions of this guy, too, were in fact good because he, too, enjoyed drawling pichures, ya know?

"He had no right to do what he done."

Hate to break the terrible news to you bro, but the homeowner had every right under the sun to defend his property and family.

Actually. Oakland, Tn. is a very small burb 20 minutes from Memphis. My guess that the police would have been on the scene immediately.

Ahhh Tennessee, the home of shoot first, shoot later and ask questions while you are reloading. My kind of town.

Or better yet, sign up for one of those alarm services so you can say, "You better get out! I've got Todd on the phone right here!" ;-)

Those commercials quack me up.

If this had happened in the Oakland in California, rather than the one in Tennessee, there definitely would have been a reference to his being an "aspiring rap artist".
