Viet Nam Gearing For War With China? ( Oil )

With attention focused on North Korea's brinkmanship on nuclear weapons and missiles, another potential crisis is brewing that is about ready to spill over into violence, with Vietnam apparently preparing to challenge China's ownership of a string of islands thought to be the link to billions of dollars worth of oil.

In asserting its rights to the Spratly Islands also claimed by China, Vietnam has ordered six Project 636 Kilo-class submarines from Russia and has gotten permission for the purchase, in addition to other military arms Vietnam has ordered.

Russia sees the sales as strategically beneficial and Chinese critics suggest Russia is trying to gain "strategic benefit by stepping up arms sales to Southeast Asian countries. Its arms sales to Vietnam possibly have special significance for Russia, because returning to Cam Ranh Bay has been a goal long cherished by Russia."

Given China's protective view that East Asia is in its sphere of influence, any new introduction of a Russian military presence, including military assistance to an old adversary, can only exacerbate their relationship.

>>> the reality is NO ONE will dare to fight China in it´s own backyard. <<<<<

Thinking of Viet Nam as a people (culture) and not as the despicable Hanoi Commie government......

The reality is that Viet Nam has been fighting and beating China for several hundred years.

A ground battle at the northern border woujld be a disaster for China, and I doubt it would even find much domestic support inside China.

The Spratlys are another matter. Five countries claim some level of ownership.

The Chinese wouldn’t be like the Americans—they would use nukes. They could de-populate Viet Nam and replace the people with Han Chinese. We would say nothing because they hold our paper. and Chinese trade is so important today. Viet Nam better wise up— this aint the 1970s or 1980s. The USA will not help them.

China has come a long way since “the 70’s”, and the Vietnamese have not

Sure, but do the tin horn dictators in Hanoi know that? After all the reason the Taliban took us on in 2001 was that they assumed that if they could beat the USSR in its own back yard they could certainly beat us fighting on the other side of the world. These dictatorships tend to be very insulated. They don't see what they don't what to see. Most of the current leadership in Vietnam are the heroes of the war with America. All they remember is that if you are determined enough you can beat a world power. That is especially true if hard economic times, like what happened to us in the 70s and what is happening to the Chinese now.

Of course this ignores the fact that the Chinese are a lot more ruthless than we are. I don't see a lot of survivors from "Peace" marches in China.

“Apparently Hanoi thinks the U.S.A. will come to its assistance against China...If only they would abandon Communism and the Cult Of Bac Ho.”

I wouldn’t care if the gooks started flying the Stars & Stripes in Hanoi, The gooks NEVER accounted for ALL the American POW’s & MIA’s so we ain’t going back! To hell with them!

This ain’t the late ‘70s early ‘80s when the Vietnamese gave the invading Chinese a black eye.

I never heard about this... and of course I was in HS back then...

Looking at the map, how do the Chicoms claim the Spratly’s?

The same way the English claim the Falklands.

Don’t underestimate the VNs. THey have bloodied China’s nose before. They know how to organize, and how to fight.

The Hanoi Cult of Bac Ho is disgusting, but the people of Viet Nam know how to fight like demons and the have been fighting and winning against the Chinese for several centuries.

After 1975 they decimated the Khmer Rouge ***in one week*** and immediately afterwards had to fight the Chinese at the northern border, who were PO'd about the demise of their buddy Pol Pot (really a family squabble since Pol Pot was a creation of Bac Ho and his "Communist Party of Indochina").

In any case the Vietnamese may be nervous but China would be crazy to take them on in a ground war. They would lose millions.

“They know how to organize, and how to fight?”

Well, your experience must have been very different than mine because I recall that every time that we Marines captured an area and turned it over to the ARVN’s; we would have to go BACK and retake it from the VC and/or NVA...and the ROK Marines had absolutely NO RESPECT for the ARVN's...I remember the ROK Marines "taking out" a whole company of ARVN's who had approached the ROK's position. And of course after we pulled out of Nam, we all know what happened...

That’s not quite what I meant, but yes I agree with you.

The Hanoi Cult of Bac Ho must pay for it’s many past and ongoing sins.

“Walter Chronkite beat us.”

BINGO!

We have a winner!

Needless to say again but I will LOL...
The Viet Nam war was lost in America not Viet Nam.

And contrary to the anti-war propaganda spewed by Cronkite & See B.S. et al, we DID NOT LOSE ONE MAJOR BATTLE IN VIET NAM...including the Tet Offensive!

Semper Fi,
Kelly

yes but the important fact is HAS BEEN beating China...
If we like it or not China has become the dominat military power in Asia. and for domestic support. When have the Chicoms ever cared if their actions are supportet by their own people? they don´t care nor do they need the support of domestic people.
