"Yankees Suck" Offends Texas Rangers' Delicate Sensitivities

A Texas Rangers’ fan who wore a "Yankees Suck" shirt to Tuesday's game against New York was told by a security guard to change it -- or she would be kicked out.

"He came down and said, ‘You have to change that shirt,’” said Kristen Knapp-Webb, of Carrollton. “I said, 'But it's not profane. Why do I have to change my shirt?' He said, 'The Texas Rangers organization considers that shirt to be profane.'"

The Rangers implemented a code of conduct for fans several years ago after some people complained they were offended by shirts such as hers, a team spokesman said.

"That particular phrase is one we’ve received a lot of complaints about," said Rangers spokesman John Blake. "That kind of thing is offensive to a lot of people, especially if you have young children and that kind of thing. And I think that's why we have that policy."

Knapp-Webb and her husband, Walter, said they consider themselves loyal Rangers fans. They even named their dog "Ranger."

They had gone to the game Tuesday to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary. He wore a Texas Rangers jersey, and she wore the "Yankees Suck" shirt her husband gave her for an anniversary gift.

No other fans seemed offended by her shirt and, in fact, many laughed, she said.

"It's funny," she said. "It's the thing fans do to each other to razz them, to make them laugh (and) have a good time."

But before the rain-delayed game started, she said, a security guard told her she had to turn the shirt inside out, change it or leave the ballpark.

"I understand it's private property," Knapp-Webb said. "But they can't not offend every person who walks in that door. It's not possible."

Under protest, she went to a restroom and turned the shirt inside out. She and her husband decided to leave a short time later, before the game started.

She said she hopes the Rangers clarify their policy.

"I think 'profanity' needs a definition, and I don't think 'sucks' is included," Knapp-Webb said.

The Rangers’ Code of Conduct states, "Any person wearing clothing with language… that may be offensive to another guest may be denied entry into the stadium, or ejected from the stadium without refund."

One of the first baseball games I attended was at Angels’ Stadium - against Seattle. I was sitting in the right field area. When The Mariners came out to field a guy behind me shouted to Susuki “Ichiro you suck!” Everyone around laughed, but I thought it very unfair as Ichiro is a damn good player.

My companion explained that it was just gamesmanship.

That wasn’t tonight was it? ‘Just got back from Angel Stadium where Seattle beat them 5-2. Good game though. From my attention span Ichiro was at least 2 for 3 & maybe better still. And once he gets on the base pads, wow, is he fast.

1) You’re an imbecile by attaching monolithic philosophical outlook to a geographical location, as if because of where one LIVES they are irredeemably worthless.

2) You’re a disgrace to this country and this site. I don’t understand how someone so openly hostile to half of the team (conservatives/libertarians) because of their geographical location and so anti-American is not blacklisted as a troll.

Got your attention. You see how to actually get some attention now, we are fighting Marxists. I believe in states rights you are obviously a Federalist. You get what you deserve.

You Yankees sure are statists at heart, it isn't hard to bring it out.

Remember the bottom of a Federal boot is not a tasty thing.

BTW, Jim Robinson, the Founder of Free Republic is secesh himself. So you are the troll.

And BTW, somehow I doubt JimRob is “secesh”. Somehow I doubt he is anti-American or thinks all Yankees suck or that he wishes this country was destroyed in a war.

LOL.

I’m always amused by bozos who feeeeeel the need to prop their POV by name-dropping. Says something about the “quality” of their argument...

Post 16 Jim Robinson from thread;

Texas State Senator Blasts Perry For Secessionist Talk

The only way to settle this is for the rest of the nation to secede from Texas. But, of course, then I’ll be moving to the Lone Star Republic! Go TEXAS!!

Anyone north of Dallas is a yankee. However, Peggy Hill was born in Montana, and Hank Hill was born in New York city, so I guess it’s a state of mind.

Baseball has lost its mind and its passion. In my day the players were close enough to meet in person. I met Hank Aaron, Bob Gibson, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, and Don Drysdale.

Now the players are far away like rock stars, and when they win the pennant fans are treated like an enemy army by the police. Does anyone remember the joy of 1969 when Met fans went nuts three different times storming the field to celebrate with the players?

We've become a legalistic bunch of people who twist ourselves into knots before expressing ourselves. If baseball isn't fun who needs it?

And another sore spot with me, I don't want to be searched like in the blasted airports upon entering football games. So I don't go.

For the record I don't hate my Northern countrymen, I just want to live free of them. To hate them would require that I give a crap about them. I could give a flying F about you or any other Northerner or Yankee.
