Whatever he says, I'm betting it will be faithful to those two thoroughly discredited slogans, "compassionate conservatism" and "new tone in Washington".
In other words, Bush continues to be a disappointment to conservatives, his good work to contain terrorists notwithstanding--that was his sworn duty. Too many other responsibilities either ignored or bungled.
I agree.
Bush had a Republican Congress for six years. And his major achievement during that time? He added a major new entitlement program.
He also doubled the budget of the Department of Education, in under four years.
Look, we both have to give him his due on the WOT, but why would he think it necessary to do that in reaction to terrorism on our soil, and yet think it a good idea to allow 30,000 Saudi Nationals to attend our schools on student visas? And the southern border, thousands of five man teams could have entered and he couldn’t have cared less. And frankly, we have no idea whatsoever if they did or didn’t.
We don’t know that there aren’t literally thousands of sleeper cells in the United States just waiting for the proper time. Korea, Iran, China vs Tiawan, the Palestinians with Arabs in tow, Russia... we don’t know what the future holds. We don’t know that a concerted effort will not be launched that will swamp our resources, and have us facing hell on our own soil too.
And yet, the sleep-walking eight years proceeded as it did.
Any way you slice it, Bush hurt us.
