"Should have never been applied as it has been. Anchor babies are just wrong. The intention was for children of freed slaves ...not illegals." Exactly.
"Every Person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons." Senator Jacob Howard, co-author of the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, 1866.

That worked out really well. Why didn’t he make the
amendment more explicit?

Under Deals proposal, babies born in the U.S. would automatically have citizenship only if at least one of their parents is a U.S. citizen or national, a legal permanent resident of the U.S., or actively serving in the U.S. military. As the child of two legal immigrants--one who was later naturalized as a U.S. citizen, and the other remained a permanent resident--I wholeheartedly support this proposal, which is, in fact, quite generous, as it only requires one parent (either mother or father) to be legally under the jurisdiction of the United States.

Deal, who has submitted his bill to the House Judiciary Committee, said hes not optimistic about it becoming law this year unless it is tacked onto another bill. But if congress miraculously overrode Obama's veto, Obama is getting ready for that contingency:
