A Pittsburgh-area teenager has been suspended from middle school when a random search turned up an eyebrow shaver in her handbag. Officials at Linton Middle School in Penn Hills recommended at a Wednesday disciplinary hearing that 15-year-old be expelled for the rest of this year and 45 days next year.
The teen said she doesn't consider the eyebrow trimmer a weapon. She fears expulsion will hurt her chances of becoming a nurse-anesthetist. She's a Girl Scout and a member of the school's basketball team, choir and leadership team.
The school released a statement saying it has a standard disciplinary policy that addresses all students equally...

Well the poor girl probably needs to keep it handy...
I just looked them up on google.com and checked out the first 500 pictures.
Not a weapon or weapon like thing in the lot.
I think the problem here is that the young lady refused to respond to flirting by the principal so now she must be punished!
In short, it's just another case of CHILD ABUSE!
What a shame.
Kerist! You are a walkin’ weapons depot! Don’t get caught within 1000 feet of a school zone. /s Generally I carry a Leatherman as well.
I went to Linton, and I teach a local Christian school. I hope her parents call to enroll her where she would be cher ished as well as educated.
I’m sure there are plenty of attorneys in their county who would gladly take the case, and perhaps even get her some money. Her suspension won’t stick.

Because a lot of them are!

When I see this kind of suspension, well any kind of suspension for something ignorant like this, my first thought is what does that do to the overall progress in school. That to me is just trying to guarantee a youngster will fail because they get so far behind. Like you, I hope she goes elsewhere and stays on track.
I had no idea either. Here is a photo:
Splendid little weapon, sort of a mini-boxcutter. The school may have overreacted, but I see their point.
In many districts, they are NOT 'okay', if they are "over-sharpened".
The first time we heard of this was when we asked a friend's grandchild why her writing had such thick lines; why didn't she use a sharp penci?.
She explained that there is a 'depointer' next to the pencil sharpener. Students first sharpen a pencil, then use the device to break the sharp tip off the point. Failure to do so meant you were creating a 'weapon'.
Zero Tolerance policies are made by cowards and fools who don’t want to have to make decisions or use common sense judgement. These ba****ds need to be pilloried publicly and held up to extensive ridicule.
'Pencil sharpeners' like these hardly raised an eyebrow unless the principal personally took it away from you. Kind of betrays my age, but I am not comfortable with kids growing up with and accepting as normal the totalitarian attitudes that are all the fashion with 'educators' nowadays.
Where I grew up in southern California, switchblades were always regarded as weapons. Mine would certainly have been confiscated had I taken it to high school and showed it to a teacher. And that was a long time ago at a safe high school without gangs. (I never used mine, I just thought it was cool.)

I'm not comfortable with it either, but that device looks a lot more dangerous than "eyebrow shaver" sounds. If I were the principal of a school with gang violence, I would certainly confiscate the students' eyebrow shavers along with their Glocks. At a safe high school I would look the other way.
An acquaintance of my daughter's asked another student for change for a dollar, four quarters for a dollar.. a teacher overheard and was convinced it was a drug deal in the making. When he was searched they found a pocketknife he uses at work left in his pocket. Expelled his senior year, zero tolerance. The on campus cop tried to press charges but was unable to. (No drugs were found on either student)
This is only one side of the story of course, but it rings true to this school. His only previous discipline problem was Saturday school for a uniform violation. Just crazy, IMHO.
When eyebrow shavers are outlawed, only outlaws will have nicely trimmed eyebrows.
