France's First Lady said that the Church's teachings had left her feeling "profoundly secular". She departed from her post's traditional religious neutrality to accuse the Pope of "damaging" countries in Africa with his stance on birth control.

I don’t know if Sarkozy is Catholic or ever married in a Catholic Church. However, if he was married in ANY Church, the RCC recognizes that marriage as valid and doesn’t recognize the divorce(s).
In the eyes of the RCC, I am not married to my husband who’d earlier been married in an Episcopal Church and was long divorced civilly before we met. They recognize only his first marriage.
Not a lot of wiggle room on these issues.

I never heard of any scripture regarding sympathy for imagined victims of possible dangers.

Ah, but the Sarkozy cheerleaders here claimed Sarko was a breath of fresh air for France and a good role model for American conservatives that defeated a “Hillary type”. Untrue. Sarko is more of the same for France, and if Hillary ran in France, she’s be the “conservative” candidate.
