NEW YORK A hospital official says a school assistant principal has become the first death in New York City linked to the swine flu virus. Flushing Hospital Medical Center spokesman Andrew Rubin says Mitchell Wiener died Sunday evening. Wiener had worked at an intermediate school in Queens. He had been sick for nearly a week before his school was closed on Thursday. He had been hospitalized and on a ventilator. The city's first outbreak of swine flu occurred three weeks ago. That was when about 700 students and 300 other people associated with a Catholic high school in Queens began falling ill, following return of several students from vacations in Mexico, the epicentre of the outbreak.

Mitchell Wiener, the assistant principal of Intermediate School 238 in Hollis, died Sunday.
Does anyone know if he had underlying health issues? So far no US deaths have been to otherwise healthy people.
Anyone know if he was in the Mexico trip?
Awful!
My heartfelt prayers go out to his family. I had heard he did have some kind of underlying health problem but I could be remembering incorrectly. I really think this thing is going to become a pandemic and the WHO has been right all along. I guess we will have to wait and see.
From the New York Times article:
City officials said Mr. Wiener might have had some other health problems. His family said that he had suffered from gout but that it was under control with medication.
The article in the following link says he had it on the weekend but on Wednesday he began hallucinating. He was hospitalized and on a ventilator and it appears he died after gaining consciousness once.
Only underlying health issue according to his 18 year old sons was gout.

where is the NY Times article. My link in post 6 says he only had gout.
I hope you are right though.
I haven't been able to find out how old he was from any of the articles. The same photo of him is on Newsday.com, and shows more of him. He was a big guy.
Sounds right “Big people” often have gout.
Thank you.
I wonder he is related to Michael Savage?
He looks a little bit like him.
