These men of the cloth are charged with teaching the truth to the faithful. In Scripture, this is a holy obligation of any elder, or bishop.

Where I grew up, “parochial” meant the Catholic school rather then the public school. That’s how we distinguished between the two—as in “he goes to parochial school”. So, yes, it is a term pertaining to Catholics.

How the term was used—I would not have picked up on the connotation that you did, so thanks for the inside view on that.

This was a carefully crafted speech, full of code, meant to marginalize opponents and unpower them, by supposedly taking the higher, moral ground in the debate.

It was freaking UNBELIEVABLE he used that speech on that platform at Notre Dame to serve up that whopper about stem cell research and diabetes. He was talking about murdering embryos for Frakenstein research experiments on the Notre Dame campus! And some students CHEERED! It was like something from a Robert Hugh Benson novel. I am more afraid that they are re-branding "pro-life." Pro-life will now mean: pushing contraception to the youngest so they can have lots of friends-with-benefits casual sex; encouraging giving babies up for adoption - especially to homosexual couples, who so unfairly are unable to have biological children of their own; embryonic stem cell and cloning research to "improve" the lives of those who are sick, only to then euthanize them when their usefulness expires.

Obama used the term "parochial" meaning "narrow, limited, provincial" which he contrasted with a "universal" view of moral relativism which he claimed was the higher ground for "coming together" on issues as enlighented freethinkers, of which presumably he considers himself one. That use of the term "parochial" is a slur and anti-Catholic. A traditional one of opponents of the Catholic faith and those who slander Catholics. Obama used it in that way.

In debates about Catholic colleges and universities, liberals and modernist dissenters have used the term "parochial" as a slur against orthodox and pro-life Catholics, invoking a parody of Catholicism.
