Panetta to CIA employees: We told Pelosi the truth
Politico ^ | Glenn Thrush

Posted on 05/15/2009 12:12:38 PM PDT by GOPinCa

CIA Director Leon Panetta just sent a stern message to his employees defending the agency against Speaker Nancy Pelosi's criticisms.

His message: We didn't mislead Congress; stay focused on your job.

Panetta's note was sent to reporters via the CIA press office. Here's the key graph:

"Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress. That is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing “the enhanced techniques that had been employed.” Ultimately, it is up to Congress to evaluate all the evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened."

The full Panetta memo is after the jump.

Pelosi goes no where. Some big thing will be leaked into the news and all will be forgotten.

That is the MO in these matters.

I still don’t understand how Pelosi’s handlers let her hold a press conference on a Thursday so it would dominate the news cycle last night and all through today.

Kinda like how Pappa Bush became head of the CIA, another man with ostensibly no intelligence experience before he headed America’s spy agency.

I can sorta see how Bush became DCI, however -- it's all down to Gerald Ford. Bush and Ford had served together in the House, and Ford actually short-listed him as a VP candidate prior to picking Rockefeller. They both served in the Navy, on carriers, during WWII. Bush had international experience (e.g., "ambassador" to China). The DCI job at the time required a savvy political hand, which Bush definitely had, and he could work with Ford on that basis.

Panetta's selection is far more puzzling, but perhaps understandable if one accounts for Obama's psychology. I suspect that Obama primarily wanted a reliable party apparatchick in that position who would serve him personally. "Apparatchick" certainly does describe Panetta's role in the Clinton administration.

It doesn't seem to be turning out that way, though ... which again raises my initial question of what's making Panetta loyal to the CIA.

I guess it will bear watching, to see if something more obvious begins to develop....

Let us not forget that Bush’s CIA director was George Tenet from the CLINTON administration!! Throw that in her face.

If they force Pelosi to resign, someone who is totally beholden to Obozo will replace her. She was there before Obozo got out of his diapers and acted like the Queen Bee - she has to go. Kinda like Trotsky and Stalin. They are all out of the same mold and the ongoing putsch will pick off any dissenters one by one. Obozo thinks he is the Supreme Being and brooks no opposition. “Oh, liberate the peasants from capitalism”

He has no allegiance to Pelosi; he may even be leading the charge to now destroy her after her latest (and biggest) fib.

Agreed. The question, rather, is what would cause this apparent institutional loyalty to the CIA. This isn't half-hearted: he's doing some serious in-fighting on CIA's behalf. What's behind it?

Pelosi has just been gutted in the open by Panneta and the CIA.

Now, she will be strung out in the open from a lamp post to twist and dry up in the winds of DC.

The Rats next move will be to remove her as House Speaker and from any power position in the House.

She probably will not resign as the Gay Frisco Deviates, who vote for her will make her a life time rep..

She will become a shunned non entity in Congress.

I think Pelosi is already toast, and her presser sealed the deal. They will now throw her into the prosecution mix, because it will afford them afford them bipartisan cover when they go after Bush-Cheney.

If and when that time comes, the outpouring of right-thinking Americans will make the Tax Day Tea Party events look like a Sunday afternoon picnic.

Yea, but do the Democrats what this ugly picture (literally) hanging around into the 2010 election cycle.

My thoughts exactly. Pelosi wasn't an isssue in 2006 because most voters never heard of her and in 2008 because of Obama. Now she's a household name...and not in a good way.

Get an easy chair, grab the remote, pop some pop corn, and open a cool drink. Then sit back and enjoy, it is going to be a lot of fun.

I think your reply was meant for post #25. I would like to add that just because the Dems don't eat their own doesn't mean they can't or won't someday.

Just like how the Dems promise the same “pie” to several opposing special interest groups at the same time. One day one of these groups are going to come to claim theirs, then all hell is going to break lose.

Good for Panetta.

He, Goss, Tenet, and others all say that Pelousy is lying.

Paneta would not be defending the CIA against Pelosi unless Obama told him to.

Yup. Just one more person Obama has thrown under the bus (it's getting pretty crowded under there).

Fair enough on Bush, but at the time, I do remember people being surprised that a guy from the diplomatic wing became DCI. But Bush, as you mention had some international exposure, both in China, at a critical time in nascent US China relations and at the UN.

The DCI post has always needed political savvy, and that partly accounts for Panetta’s appointment.

But, Panetta didn’t even bring in a modicum of international experience, having been a domestic policy type guy all his political career.

It’s the first thing that hit me when I heard about the appointment. FWIW.

You posted a very interesting probability. If their National Health Scheme goes down, they can blame Nancy and then hold off until the economy comes back.

“Just a perception but with Pelosi being the one writing the national health care package...and this going on...with a deadline of July to finish...I think the administration is intentionally arranging this event to fail.

Pelosi will begin to face weekly sessions with the media over what she heard or said. The health care events will slow down and fail because of no internal support within the democratic party. Obama knows this. So he can go along and watch health care sink....then blaming this on the Republicans next fall as elections come and go.”

“I’m amazed that Panetta is refuting Pelosi and sticking with the CIA.”

I like this quote from Panetta towards the end of his memo...

“We are an Agency of high integrity, professionalism, and dedication. Our task is to tell it like it is—even if that’s not what people always want to hear.”

Essentially he is stating they will tell the truth regardless of what Pelosi wants them say.

I agree with both of you.
‘Progressives’ play the game with 6 strikes available. (While the Republicans step up to the plate with two strikes already called.)
Somehow it’ll all be called a ‘Republican smoke screen’ by everyone. Nancy is a victim, donchknow.
