One-third of Travis Elementary School pupil missed school Thursday because of a mysterious illness, leaving Houston ISD and city officials scrambling to diagnose the cause.
They suspect a virus is behind the fevers, headaches and stomachaches that sidelined 242 children, including about 80 percent of the third grade at the Heights neighborhood school.
Thats a sharp increase from the 86 students who stayed home sick Wednesday, when educators were forced to cancel an extensive third-grade field trip.
I felt like really bad, said 8-year-old Luke Morrison, who was too sick to attempt the much-anticipated trip. I just was scared. I started crying.

Just when you thought all was clear!
I hear there is a lot of this going around. Kids get a stomach virus for a day and fairly contagious. Norwalk?
That is what I thought from my many cruises. However news break a few minutes ago said it was Influenza and being tested for Man / pig/ bird Flu!
It’s flu season now in the southern hemisphere. It’s getting cold down there with snow and rain all over.
Houston. Weather warming up. Lots of NO and third-world parents. = food poisoning
Maybe those kids figured out how to take a ‘sick day’?
All the talk about Man/pig/bird Flu had this poor child terrified. I just was scared. I started crying.
Oh heavens, not another round of this type of nonsense.
Sorry BellStar, that comment was not intended to be directed to you personally. It’s just an observation.
Every out break of some sort, now gets broad play like it really means something. On Monday, I suspect most of those kids will be back in school.
Some of my nephews got it last week and they had to close the school (upper midwest). Since then I’m hearing of more cases in kids around the country.
There really is something going around, but it is a 24 hour stomach bug.
I agree with you. I’m just fear mongered out right now.
I certainly wish these kids and their families well.
These things happen. Most of the time they’d slip under the radar. Nowadays, everything is a big mysterious threat.
I would be curious to know what these things are though.
If their dad took his belt off and told them they ARE going to school.

“We are way too close to Mexico to go blowing off this sort of thing. The swine flew has already killed hundreds of thousands of people that our children need to get vaccines before they should be allowed to return to school.”
