Cheney says “giant conspiracy” on Iran – newspaper

Washington, 13 May (WashingtonTV)—Former US Vice President Dick Cheney said on Tuesday that the various parties negotiating the Iranian nuclear dispute were pursuing different objectives, which ran counter to Washington’s goal.

“Everybody’s in a giant conspiracy to achieve a different objective than the one we want to achieve,” he told the Politico newspaper in New York, where he was attending a debate over American policy toward Iran.

Cheney said that the Islamic Republic was stalling for time to advance its nuclear program, while the Europeans were trying to restrain the United States from taking military action. Washington’s objective, he said, was to force Iran to give up its nuclear weapons.

The United States is working with Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China to pressure Iran to abandon its uranium enrichment activities. Tehran says its nuclear program is solely peaceful.

“Most of the other nations out there are willing to live with a nuclear-armed Iran,” he told Politico, citing Britain, France and Germany in particular.

Cheney has been critical of President Barack Obama’s efforts to engage with Iran diplomatically.
