Former Vice President Dick Cheney swung quietly through New York City Tuesday night to watch his daughter, Elizabeth, a former State Department official, argue the conservative side in a debate over American policy toward Iran, and to express his own skepticism of President Obama's promised negotiations.
"We fail to recognize the fact that we're alone out there in terms of trying to achieve the objective of forcing the Iranians to give up their nuclear weapons," Cheney said at a dinner following the Intelligence Squared debate, in which Elizabeth Cheney and former Coalition Provisional Authority spokesman Dan Senor debated former diplomat Nicholas Burns and Mideast scholar Ken Pollack on the topic of negotiations with Iran.
The former Vice President characterized the Iranian goal in negotiations on ending that country's nuclear program as mere stalling for time, and the Europeans as trying to "restrain the U.S." from military action.
"Everybody's in a giant conspiracy to achieve a different objective than the one we want to achieve," Cheney said.
The negotiations are "bound to fail unless we are perceived as very credible" in threatening military action against Iran, he said.
"Most of the other nations out there are willing to live with a nuclear-armed Iran" he said, citing France, Germany and the United Kingdom in particular.
Cheney was echoing his daughter's comments during the formal debate at Rockefeller University on Manhattan's East Side.
"If they believe the threat of military force is on the table thats frankly the only thing Ive seen that convinces them theyd better get serious about sanctions," Elizabeth Cheney, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, said of U.S. allies at the formal, Oxford-style debate, sponsored by the Rosenkranz Foundation.

I think Cheney is right, except that Obama is in on the "conspiracy" too -- he will not do anything to stop Iran from getting nukes.
Because Zero doesn't think its fair that Muslim nations don't have nukes, that third world countries don't have our money, that welfare recipients don't have houses/cell phones/ipods/. His sense of fairness will destroy this country.
If Dick Cheney won’t do it, maybe one day we can get Liz to run for president.
Cheney has credibility. His daughter Liz is just as strong and it is great to see them give their strong voices and opinions to what is going on. The media and Demonrats have reason to be worried as their Precious is going to fall to pieces on these issues and prove Cheney right.
As far back as 2007, Sarkozy has been an outspoken critic of Iran nuclear efforts...going to far as to say that a nuclear Iran was absolutely unacceptable.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney swung quietly through New York City Tuesday night to watch his daughter, Elizabeth...
Keep an eye on her...this is a VERY smart gal...
Liz Cheney ROCKS!
It would appear that for now, conservative women have more courage, conviction and fight than the elected republican men in DC! Bachman, Cheney, Palin come to mind.
I hope the men start ‘getting it’ soon. It is time to fight like we have never fought before and I don’t see that coming from the GOP the way it should yet.
Imagine what could be done if just a couple of dozen other prominent leaders currently cowering in the GOP spoke up.
Sark may not want a nuclear Iran, but much of France’s elite is of the opposite view.
Very good link...Definitely some of the Brits and Europeans want vengeance on the Jews who dared defy them and establish Israel
You’re right....that’s what Sarkozy has said. I wonder what the actual talk is in the Russian war rooms. They don’t appear to be making any actual movement to stop it from happening.
Playing the waiting game, perhaps, to see if Zero has a set?
Militant
What they say and what they are prepared to do about it is two different matters. I seriously doubt that France would assist us militarily in taking out Iran’s nuclear program.
Are you sure this is from the Politico?
Usually left wing blogs start out describing the Former Vice President as the extremely unpopular former Vice President, Dick Cheney.
Unfortunately, Hussein is only serious about helping his kinsmen in the destruction of Israel.
Yep...she has a lot of her mother in her. Her dad too. I often wished that Lynn Chehey would run for President...now her daughter is moving out into the light. We could do ALOT worse.
“Throughout the 1930’s, Winston Churchill spoke out concerning German rearmament, Britain’s lack of comparable military strength, and Adolf Hitler. Churchill spent most of the decade a mere Member of Parliament and not a member of the British Cabinet. By July of 1939, the British newspapers would demand overwhelmingly that Churchill be made a member of the Cabinet.1
One such newspaper declared on July 2, “That one who has so firm a grasp of the realities of European politics should not be included in the Government must be as bewildering to foreigners as it is regrettable to most of his own countrymen.”2
Churchill’s firm “grasp of the realities of European politics” can be seen as early as 1930 on the subject of Adolf Hitler.”

I’m with you there.
Cheney has forgotten more about what it takes to deliver real national security than the entire Left will ever know.
And it sounds like his daughter learned quite a bit from her Dad. :-)
