Reports: GM to export China-built cars to US

SHANGHAI – General Motors Corp. plans to begin exports of vehicles made in China to the United States within two years, ramping up sales to more than 50,000 by 2014, reports said Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for GM in China did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reports, which were said to be based on a company recovery plan given to U.S. lawmakers.

GM intends to sell 17,335 made-in-China passenger cars in the U.S. market by 2011, the Shanghai Securities News and other reports said. By 2014 exports would triple to more than 51,000, it said.

The main focus would be on exporting small cars similar to the Chevrolet Spark, the reports said.

If true, GM could end up becoming the first automaker to begin exporting to the U.S. from China: previously announced plans by Chinese manufacturers to crack the U.S. market have so far fizzled.

First toasters, then TVs, now the auto industry. What's next?

What's left might be a shorter answer.

Seriously, how could America remain rich with everything that we buy coming from China?

We can't. I'm all for free trade, so long as it's bilateral. And, I don't mind sending some jobs to Mexico as it helps stabilize what would otherwise be a near-third world country that just happens to be on our border. Plus, Mexico doesn't have 400 ICBM's pointed at us. China does.

Don't worry...we still have the financial services and insurance industries.

Plus, we can employ the marginally intelligent & ineducable as health care and food service workers. What could possibly go wrong?

This is SO sad, that is has come to this for GM. With this kind of announcement, they may as well just shut it down. They simply cannot survive, talking about selling Chinese cars! I mean, even if they sell 17000, or even 50000 of these, can you imagine how little profit per unit we are talking about? They better start making announcements about what high quality and bigger vehicles they are going to be producing.

Apparently, GM was basically told by OBooboo that GM can exist as long as they **bend over and take it in the A**, er, sell Chinese cars—and likely a whole mess of other vehicles, made in other countries, that should never be allowed on U.S. roads due to their lousy and dangerous track records. Hey, how about Russian cars that drop parts and rain fluids all the way down the freaking road or a Chinese sedan whose engine blows up? The majestic O must’ve threatened to take the GM CEO and his execs out to a lake somewhere and fit em’ with concrete booties if they didn’t do what he said.

Well, at least the Chinese cars aren’t made by union workers, right? I mean who wants to drive a car made by socialists? s/

Not "can" but "have to," considering materials and workmanship that went into that car. I guess it will be a new Yugo, only cheaper and without any quality control whatsoever:

A 1987 Consumer Reports review of the car concluded that buyers would be "better off buying a good used car than a new Yugo", and also stated that it "barely qualified as a car."

In 1989, 31-year-old Leslie Ann Pluhar, driving a 1987 Yugo over the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, was blown over the bridge's 36-inch railing by a 50 mph gust of wind. (photo)

Re: the ICBMs - why would China destroy it’s best customer and debtor?

They’ve done with cheap labor and “free trade” what their ICBMs could never do.

By flipping real estate and using the inflated equity to buy Chinese stuff... err, well I guess that didn’t turn out too well, did it?
