THE POPE STANDS UP (and walks out on Palestinian leader Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi)

In an action that spoke far louder than words, Pope Benedict yesterday walked out of an interfaith meeting in Jerusalem after the chief Islamic judge of the Palestinian Authority launched into an anti-Israeli diatribe.

The pontiff, on his first day in Jerusalem, did not realize at first that Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi, speaking in Arabic, was condemning the "crimes of the Jewish state" and accusing Israel of having "slaughtered women, children and senior citizens."

But as soon as he was told the nature of the sheikh's tirade, he stood and left the meeting, which took place at Notre Dame church, before it had concluded.

It's not as if the organizers shouldn't have seen this coming: Back in 2000, Tamimi did the same thing during a visit by the late Pope John Paul II.

A spokesman for the Holy See later condemned the remarks, saying that

Amen. My husband was a former Catholic and went to confession. Then lived in fear that he’d sin again, lose God’s grace, and wonder if he’d go to heaven, until he went again to confession. When he was born again, he said it was like a load taken off his shoulders to know his sins were forgiven and he’d never lose God’s grace. All he had to do was confess his sins directly to the Lord through Jesus Christ and be cleansed.

Actually, the Church would welcome you but then try to convince you that all life is sacred and that it begins at conception. I am not aware of any faiths that let followers practice their own theology? If you didn’t believe in the Catholic theology, why would you want to join anyway? The point is, Catholicism did not exclude you? You weren’t interested. And that’s OK.

Sorry, but along with being the mom of three sons, I worked in a prestigious university. I’m cut out to be a lot more than that. Sorry, your insults aren’t cutting it. I was respected by professors, even liberals, because of my work ethic. I come from a long line of good Norwegian immigrants and the third generation of my family to work at the University.
