Jeff Sessions's Chequered Past
The Guardian ^ | 5/5/09 | Sarah Wildman

Posted on 05/05/2009 4:49:59 PM PDT by steve-b

Last week, after Pennsylvania senator Arlen Specter switched his party affiliation from red to blue, Alabama senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III seemed all but assured to replace him as leader of the Republican bloc on the Senate judiciary committee.

And thus an uncomfortable light shined once again on a man plainly hidden in the ranks of the Senate for a dozen years now. A man known to be one of the most consistently conservative legislators on Capitol Hill. A man noted for his obstructionist tendencies. A man with a chequered history linked to America's racist past. A man, who has been, arguably, waiting for this moment for the last two decades.

Sessions's first national exposure was, surely, mortifying for the would-be federal judge. It was 1986, and the then-39-year-old US attorney for the Southern District of Alabama was a Reagan nominee to the federal bench. Sessions had good reason to believe he'd be rubber-stamped through to a judgeship – some 200 of the Gipper's judges had already been heavily sprinkled throughout the federal judicial system. But Sessions stopped up the works. The young lawyer became only the second man in 50 years to be rejected by the Senate judiciary committee....

The tip of the problem was a 1984 case that came to be known as the "Marion 3" – Sessions's prosecution of three civil rights workers over what he perceived as voting fraud....

...All three were quickly acquitted. Sessions's choice to focus on their efforts looked a lot less like good governance and a lot more like voter intimidation....

Anyone who has followed politics in Alabama, and that excludes liberal British publications completely, knows that voter fraud is RAMPANT in Alabama.

Sessions was NOT afraid to take on the political incorrect targets.

I’m from Alabama and I PROUDLY call Jeff Sessions my senator.

It’s an honor to be bashed by a Communist rag like The Guardian.

I wonder who put them up to this? Normally matters like who chairs senate committees are beneath the radar of a British newspaper. Why would English readers care about this? But it might be the opening gun in a DNC media campaign.

If the Guardian and Widman hate him that much he must be our guy. President?? :-)

He’s right on, on his assessment of the groups mentioned and their philosophical basis. I’m sure he’d include ACORN now too.

Our Heavenly Father has put this good man in this position at this time for a reason and I sincerely thank Him for doing so!

I can think of no other senator I would rather have in this job right now!

>>>Senator Jeff Session is a fine man and one of the few remaining statesmen.<<<

Jeff Sessions and Bob Corker (R-OK) are two of the brightest and analytical minds in the Senate.

I'll never forget Corker questioning the automakers. Corker had Chris Dodd, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee scared to death that his bailout plan would fail because Corker was tearing it to pieces.

>>>...and to hold Obama totally accountable for his pick<<<

It's not Obama picking this time. This is for Republican leadership on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But Obama's lefty friends on the Guardian in the UK are trying to exert influence.

1984, “The Marion Three”... so called “civil rights workers” committing voter fraud? Who’d believe it?

2009, and only the labels have changed...they’re now “community organizers” and they’re running the country.

Corker is from TN, not OK, and is actually very RINOish, just not on that issue.

Sessions is excellent. He must be because they are out to smear him.

Want a racist? Try Jeremiah Wright ....or perhaps Obama.

Senator Jeff Session is a good man and a patriot. A true and rare Statesman.

They are out to demoralize and destroy us all.
