Woman: Dad was the Zodiac, and I can prove it
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Thursday, April 30, 2009 | Kevin Fagan

Posted on 05/03/2009 3:45:16 PM PDT by Jim W N

The Zodiac killer, it turns out, was a Jekyll and Hyde carpenter from Orange County who dragged his 7-year-old daughter along for thrills as he carried out his reign of carnage in the Bay Area 40 years ago. At least that's what the daughter, Deborah Perez, told reporters and a frenzied mob of Zodiac buffs Wednesday.

Somewhere in between all the yelling and jostling for face time on TV cameras, an actual press corps listened to Perez, now 47, and her representatives lay out a case that the Zodiac was her father. Their guy: Guy Ward Hendrickson, a resident of Santa Ana in 1968 and 1969, when the Zodiac killed his five known victims before seemingly dropping from the face of the earth.

Perez said her father took her along on murder jaunts because the two were unusually close. She was young, unaware of exactly what her dad was doing, she said. Her father explained that the gunshots she heard as she sat in the family car nearby were "just firecrackers."

Hendrickson died of cancer at age 68 in 1983, Perez said. Her mother and five siblings had no idea of what was going on, she said - and indeed she said she had no inkling that her dad might be the Zodiac until she saw a sketch of the killer on the TV show "America's Most Wanted" in August 2007.

"I recognized the individual as my father," she said.

She said it never occurred to her to call police until she saw the TV show because she had not heard of the Zodiac before then. Work with a forensics psychologist helped her clear up some of the memories, she said, "but remembering what happened really wasn't a problem. I just had no idea what they all meant."

She’s Henderson’s step daughter.

The article states the murders occurred in 1968 and ‘69, then abruptly stopped. I don’t think that time span quite counts as being “several” years.

Also, she’s Henderson’s step daughter, so his propensities not necessarily in her DNA so to speak.

It has nothing to do with DNA. It would have to do with her being exposed to that. (if true)

I honestly didn’t want to reveal this on FR, but I’m D.B. Cooper.

(I’m not writing a book about it, but send $29.95 to my FReep Mail and I’ll get you a copy)

Uh-huh. Maybe. But when I see "psychologist" and "memory" in the same sentence my BS sense starts tingling.

Which ever way it actually happened she probably believes it to be real NOW. Whether it actually is real is quite another thing.

No, I meant the father was in his fifties when the murders were committed. That seems a bit old for a serial killer.

And as famous as he is - “only” five murders? That barely qualifies as a serial killer in my mind. No disrespect to the deceased intended.

Yes, we’ll have to monitor our BS-O-Meter on this.

Don’t know if she’s for real or not.

But even in her claims it appears she didn’t understand what was going on.

He told her various explanations for things like the sound of gunfire (firecrackers) or the presence of a gun in the car when he made sure to hide it from cops, etc.

She’s not claiming to have understood it or actually watched the killings, if I read it right.

But was along in the car during the time frames.

Be that as it may, the insistence that she should be suspected of copying his actions later in her own life is a bridge too far, IMO.

Kind of warms the heart doesn’t it?

True. I’m 48 and grew up in the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles and I knew about the killer.
