The Zodiac killer, it turns out, was a Jekyll and Hyde carpenter from Orange County who dragged his 7-year-old daughter along for thrills as he carried out his reign of carnage in the Bay Area 40 years ago. At least that's what the daughter, Deborah Perez, told reporters and a frenzied mob of Zodiac buffs Wednesday.
Somewhere in between all the yelling and jostling for face time on TV cameras, an actual press corps listened to Perez, now 47, and her representatives lay out a case that the Zodiac was her father. Their guy: Guy Ward Hendrickson, a resident of Santa Ana in 1968 and 1969, when the Zodiac killed his five known victims before seemingly dropping from the face of the earth.
Perez said her father took her along on murder jaunts because the two were unusually close. She was young, unaware of exactly what her dad was doing, she said. Her father explained that the gunshots she heard as she sat in the family car nearby were "just firecrackers."
Hendrickson died of cancer at age 68 in 1983, Perez said. Her mother and five siblings had no idea of what was going on, she said - and indeed she said she had no inkling that her dad might be the Zodiac until she saw a sketch of the killer on the TV show "America's Most Wanted" in August 2007.
"I recognized the individual as my father," she said.
She said it never occurred to her to call police until she saw the TV show because she had not heard of the Zodiac before then. Work with a forensics psychologist helped her clear up some of the memories, she said, "but remembering what happened really wasn't a problem. I just had no idea what they all meant."

Anyone else have a clue?
DUH
Is she confessing to being an accomplice?
How could a 47 year old woman from the San Francisco area not know about the Zodiac Killer? Heck I am from the Milwaukee area and knew who Dhamer was right when the story broke and I was only 6 years old at the time.
She must have a book coming out
Yawnnnnnn

“Is she confessing to being an accomplice?”
Sure seems like it; but as she was seven years old at the time, there’s probably not much the authorities can do about it ...
I wasn’t even born when the Zodiac killer was around, and I have heard of him! He’s pretty well known.
No, she was 7-years-old at the time.
She’s got a book or a movie in the works, IMO.
The police are still waiting for her to produce the glasses she said she has.

That’s my point, The Zodiac killer is probably the most famous at large serial killer in US history, right up there with the Orignal Night Stalker. She would have to be very very stupid not to know about him.
al baby,
Such skepticism?
Turns out Perez (the woman in the article) is his step daughter, brought to the U.S. with her mother by Henderson. His real daughter has some fairly goofy reasons for denying Perez' story. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
brb let me look that word up
Those murders happened over the course of several years. If she assisted him at these murders, she should be investigated until it can be determined the best way to proceed. If what she says is true, then her actions during the intervening time needs to be investigated. A child exposed to this would likely grow up to do the same thing.
The guy was a serial killer in his 50’s? And the girl wrote a letter to Melvin Belli when she was seven?
I totally agree. Now, the Night Stalker, I am very familiar with. We were staying with my grandparents in the L.A. area during his killing spree, and I was scared to death! He actually killed someone in my great-grandma's town, and I had to spend a weekend with her, because she had just had surgery. I made my parents come pick me up the second day!
Poor, sheltered woman. She’s probably never heard of Charles Manson either.
