Patrick Toomey, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, said Saturday that he is a mainstream conservative with enough statewide appeal to win a general election against five-term incumbent Arlen Specter.
"Reagan carried this state twice. I don't think this state has changed," said Toomey, a former U.S. Representative from Lehigh County.
While Toomey said his reputation is that of a staunch conservative and fiscal hawk, he won three straight terms in a district that has more registered Democrats than Republicans and which supported the Democratic presidential candidate in each of the last five elections.
Toomey spoke yesterday at a gathering of Moon Township Republicans, where speakers railed against the Obama administration's economic programs and against Specter's switch from the Republican to the Democratic Party last week.

I heard today that the PA GOP is trying to get Tom Ridge to run.

Didn’t Ridge say that he quit Homeland Security because the salary didn’t cover his household expenses and other responsibilities?
Unless he was lying ( a politician lying? perish the thought) , US Senate pays the same as a cabinet job.
Toomey can defeat Spector only if 110% if the voters don’t show up at the polls.
that’s so unfair
we’d like to unload a few cities & towns to Pennsylvania
You can have Camden, Newark, Trenton, etc
:)
Which is exactly why the neo-cons will try to run Ridge instead of you.
I dont know that he’ll be dead, but I do think there is a good chance that he will have a relapse before Nov 2010 and require more treatment. Maybe a bone marrow transplant.
It’s not unheard of for voters to throw out a long-time elected official when they are concerned about his age and health. It could happen here.
No thanks we have enough problems with all those well informed and active voters in philadelphia, all 200% of them
The polls indicate that only a small percentage of the population approve the job the legislature is doing. Those polled were Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Liberals, Conservatives etc. It is a mess!

After you become a friend of Pat Toomey, if you want to become my friend on Facebook, contact me by Freep mail.
A friend of mine since childhood lives there, and life has been very hard for her lately. She has lost just about everything in the mess: her job, went though a divorce (her husband was angry because she couldn’t get another job right away), her replacement job that barely paid enough, and now her house.
She takes care of her elderly mother and a teenage child from a previous marriage, and they don’t have anywhere to go. They might even end up coming out here to NY to live with me, although I must say that things aren’t that much better for me either.
This is what the lesser of two evils has gotten us, and in some cases the aboslute evil. Government spending at the levels it has been at helps absolutely nothing, ever. It makes casualties out of the successful and takes us down the road to financial ruin.
Moderates can just go packing as far as I’m concerned, and what happens to them afterward I hope is far worse than what we average kinds of people are going through.
What is going on is massive wealth re-distribution and you and your friend are probably not one of the distributees. I hope things approve for you and yours.
This is going to get ugly fast as the RNC/Senate Republican Election Committee square off against the state organization.
Not PA GOP, but the National GOP. See my last post. A deal has already been cut for Toomey, and now the National GOP wants to break it.
It’s going to be a interesting election. You know there is going to be some democrat out there that wants this nomination. If it is a two way race in the end Toomey just might be able to win it. But where it gets tricky is if Specter loses the democrat nomination. What if he decides to run as a independent?
Give New York and Philadelphia (aka West Camden) to NJ. All three states would benefit.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Pennsylvania law allows that. Of course he could still run as a write in, but from what I’ve remembered from previous situations he couldn’t get on the ballot.
I have heard reports over and over and over again how thousands of Republicans in PA switched their registration to DemocRAT in 2008. Not one of these reports mentions Operation Chaos, which is why those voters switched to RAT, so they could vote for Hillary in the PA primary against big O.
Now, this is how we beat Specter. All OPERATION CHAOS operatives in PA should vote in the RAT primary. They should identify Specter’s biggest RAT threat and vote for them. At least they will hurt Specter, force him to spend money in the primary. At best they will defeat him and put a whacky RAT in the nomination.
Then everybody get out and vote for Toomey. I hope the commander of Operation Chaos gets this message. We need the leadership of Maha Rushie to defeat Specter, and thereby prevent a RAT from taking this seat.
I think it will be an uphill battle for Toomey in the best of circumstances. The general election is very different than the primary he was close in last time. I hope he has a much better campaign. Even then...

Agreed. That state and that region have been becoming bluer in recent years and Arlen will take some RINO voters with him. It’ll be a tough battle. Not impossible but not a cake walk either.
