The World Health Organisation tonight raised the pandemic alert level to five out of six after the continued spread of swine flu world wide.
Margaret Chan, the organisation's director-general, said tonight: "I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5.
"Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world."
Making a call to governments, she said: "This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other industries, to the pharmaceutical industry and business industry that certain actions must be undertaken now with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace."

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country Wednesday as a precautionary measure against the spread of swine flu even though no cases have been reported here yet, the Health Ministry said.
The move immediately provoked resistance from pig farmers. At one large pig farming center just north of Cairo, farmers refused to cooperate with Health Ministry workers who came to slaughter the animals and the workers left without carrying out the government order.
“It has been decided to immediately start slaughtering all the pigs in Egypt using the full capacity of the country’s slaughterhouses,” Health Minister Hatem el-Gabaly told reporters after a Cabinet meeting with President Hosni Mubarak.
Egypt’s overwhelmingly Muslim population does not eat pork due to religious restrictions. But the animals are raised and consumed by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population.
Health Ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman estimated there were between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt.”

I would add that this COULD be a “Big Deal” if, if, if this virus mutates a bit. That is what happened in 1918 with that years horrific pandemic. It started in the spring and wasn’t too severe. It nearly burned out over the summer, but then it mutated and became far more lethal. By Thanksgiving, 500,000+ people were dead, many laying in mass graves since the bodies piled up so rapidly that they couldn’t be buried individually.

Do I think that this will happen? Probably not. But since we humans have no natural immunity to this strain of virus, if it mutates a bit so that drugs like Tamiflu don’t work (or only work partially), the number of fatalities COULD be enormous.
Oh, by the way, in 1918 nobody could hop a plane in the morning and be halfway around the world by the end of the day. This has the potential to spread very, very quickly. The combination of potentially high lethality and quick transmission is just something that you don’t F$%& with, not unless you’re an eco-freak that wishes to rid the world of as much of humanity as possible.
