The World Health Organisation tonight raised the pandemic alert level to five out of six after the continued spread of swine flu world wide.
Margaret Chan, the organisation's director-general, said tonight: "I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5.
"Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world."
Making a call to governments, she said: "This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other industries, to the pharmaceutical industry and business industry that certain actions must be undertaken now with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace."

I listened in on a conference call yesterday that was conducted by CDC and FEMA lawyers to discuss the legal issues associated with mass quarantine and isolation. It was announced on the website so I called in. Their powerpoint deck can be found here. The presentation is called "Federal Public Health Emergency Law - Implications for State and Local Preparedness and Response ". The most interesting stuff is near the end.

A friend called me earlier to say what a bunch of baloney this all is. Now she called back furious, her kid’s high school has cancelled classes and activities through Sunday night, as there is a “possible, but not confirmed” case of swine flu. Her husband told her he had heard of another possible case at the middle school, so it too, was being closed. This is in Kane County, IL.

I watched that last night. Creepy show.
Lots of rumors out there...we are trying to track down several unconfirmed cases birdies at hospitals told us about. Just crazy out there. Let’s hope this stays very mild.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone in a blue helmet is an enemy combatant.
The blue helmets are easy to pick up with iron sights or scopes.

I’m sorry, but I’ve been watching you post this same opinion for three days. And forgive me for being so rude, but I have to say: If you spent half as much time educating yourself on this flu as you did on FReeping and posting your uninformed opinion that this is “nothing”, then you might have a clue why there is SOME concern here.
No one is saying the sky is falling, but you saying this is nothing to worry about 1,000 times does not make it so.
Same goes to everyone else who keeps posting “What’s the big deal?” posts.
