And there is the problem. We may not have liked or trusted Spector, but he gave the Republicans a very small margin of error. Franken will be seated and there you go.

Moreover, there are now no Republicans from the border of NH to VA. We cannot go on like this unless there we can pick up strength in some other places. And that is not going to happen anytime soon.

There are no blue states turning purple and there are no purple states turning red. But there are a number of red states turning purple and a number of purple states turning blue.

Just amazing that the GOP wanted us to back this POS just a week ago.

"Will Snowe and Collins follow soon??

Probably not unless they face a serious challenge in their respective primaries. I'm not sure when they're do fro reelection, but I don't believe either has to stand for reelection in 2010.

They'll continue to have more "power" as deal makers or breakers, even if the Dems have 60. With Ben Nelson and a couple other more moderate Dems in the Senate, I don't believe a filibuster-proof majority will hold for every issue. JMHO.

Unintended consequences rears its ugly head.

Everyone has been ecstatic over Toomey’s numbers against Specter, but Specter just pulled a fast one.

It’s quite possible the democrats will let him run uncontested, in which case he would be the incumbent democrat in the seat, and Toomey would have a hard time defeating him.

So then we end up with Specter still in the Senate, but even worse, providing the vote which will make filibusters impossible for the GOP.

THIS should explain to everyone why President Bush went ahead and backed him.

Exactly. I don’t know why people are so happy about this. With him changing sides, the Dems get their 60 votes. At least with him being a declared Republican, it was possible to pressure him to tow the line (e.g., card check). It’s over, people. Everything that Obama wants will now be fast tracked.

Yes, I’m afraid you are correct. Specter will be Senator in PA until he dies.

This may make it even harder to avoid the Dems having 60 Senators.

Since the opposition only has about 25, what does it matter?

providing the vote which will make filibusters impossible for the GOP.

What's it matter when they wouldn't use it anyway?

i have to say this is probabally the right thing. But this sells the country out even more. I really feel like we are done as a republic.

Precisely. America wants SOCIALISM, so be it. You can thank our education system for this turn of events. Few young people today are conservative.

Well, there are some issues they might have been able to do one on, like cap and trade.

I do not share everyone's enthusiasm. I don't think Toomey is a sure thing, by any means, and ACORN is very active in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

I’m just shocked he and McStain didn’t have a joint press conference announcing BOTH of them switching parties.

The D and the R behind someone’s name really doesn’t matter all that much anymore. By and large they are all corrupt to some degree. Elections truly have become a choice between a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich.

The GOPers should rejoice over this. In fact, if they had any balls at all, they should have purged him and others like him from the party years ago.

And it will have another long-term impact. This reinforces the idea of a party in decline. Spector may be a rat, but he is a rat jumping ship. Rats jump sinking ships. At the gut level, the GOP (and conservatives in general) are looking as though they are losing relevance. And if you look as though you are becoming irrelevant, you are.
