Mexico canceled school nationwide Monday and warned the death toll from a swine flu epidemic believed to have killed 149 people would keep rising before it can be contained. Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said 20 of the deaths have been confirmed to be from swine flu and the government was awaiting results on the others.
"We are the most critical moment of the epidemic. The number of cases will keep rising so we have to reinforce preventive measures," Cordova said at a news conference that was briefly shaken by an earthquake centered in southern Mexico.

Heck it rained a lot last night, and schools closed around here. I can’t imagine what will happen if this flu hits. :(
I heard on ‘Coast to Coast am with George Noorey’ that it’s more like 2000 dead in Mexico.. Alex Jones says Mexican doctors told him so! LOL!;) Maybe he’s finally right about something? yikes!
Someone slap Shep.. He’s saying we are politicizing the flu by asking the border be closed. Unfreakin’ believable!
I hear Shep likes being slapped.
Surely the U.S. military is capable of defending our own border with Mexico. There would be other benefits to closing down the border, such as demonstrating our will and our ability to stop illegal immigration. The world would take note. I dont suggest a permanent closure.
Obama of course is not about to take strong action to defend our border, so its all academic.
Kind of makes you wish people would just shut up about it.
#1-Is this just a propaganda test and there is nothing abnormal about these numbers?
#2-Is the media just knee jerking because of a slow news cycle?
#3-Does the WHO and CDC know something that is peculiar about this strain and they actually concerned that we could see significantly higher fatalities rates than normal?
#4-Is this an orchestrated news event to distract people from the BIG LEFT HAND thats reaching in our pockets?
To which 'conspiracy' does all our fellow freepers subscribe?
I'm hoping it is #2.
So tens of thousands die every year from the flu yet we don’t even know that the odds of dying are greater from this swine flu.
I say it’s bogus and people getting scared over nothing.
Here’s that web site that is tracking the events, with the first couple of paragraphs from their site explaining what their company (Veratect) does. And - their first observation on March 30th(!) of something going on.
The sickness in La Gloria, Mexico is discussed in later paragraphs at the site.
*******************************
Introduction
At Veratect, we operate two operations centers based in the United States (one in the Washington, DC area and one in Seattle, WA) that provide animal and human infectious disease event detection and tracking globally. Both operations centers are organizationally modeled after our National Weather Service using a distinct methodology inspired by the natural disaster and meteorology communities. Our analysts handle information in the native vernacular language and have been thoroughly trained in their discipline, which include cultural-specific interpretation of the information. We are currently partnered with 14 organizations that provide us with direct ground observations in 238 countries. We are a multi-source, near-real time event detection and tracking organization with years of experience in this discipline.
March 30
Veratect reported that a 47-year-old city attorney for Cornwall was hospitalized in a coma at Ottawa General Hospital following a recent trip to Mexico.
Okay - I got an updated page when I went to that Veratect site. Interesting stuff with respect to technology, keeping in touch with physicians around the world, etc.:
****************
As I left the operations center this evening, we faced at least 33 countries reporting suspect cases of swine flu, and 7 countries with laboratory-confirmed cases. Indeed, no one knows the true extent of this global crisis yet. Clearly, detection and tracking of swine flu events now is a monstrously complicated undertaking.
So, in partnership with Ozmosis, a leading physicians social network in the United States, we have decided to take the social media revolution in biosurveillance to another level: connecting the Veratect early warning information directly to our nations physicians.
Previously I talked about our use of Twitter to disseminate near-real time information from 37 of the worlds languages about the current global swine flu crisis. The problem with Twitter, though, is you sacrifice speed for character length (limit= 140 characters). Well, thanks to Ozmosis, we have created a joint portal for Ozmosis physician community whereby they can have full access to Veratects detailed reports and be able to respond and add information.
This marks the advent of the 21st century in public health, where early warning information about the world is brought to the fingertips of the community physician in near-real time. It is our belief the power of social networking will more efficiently marry situational awareness with physicians daily lives and encourage better reporting of disease events that could negatively affect our communities, our country, and indeed, our world.
.Stay tuned for the world to change.

Why is the swine flu killing only Mexicans?
//////////////
Because the illegals in the USA don’t want to be deported to ......guess where? So they are dieing without going to the gov for help.
So far.
Your right.
The World Trade Folks would rather have Americans killed off than have their profits hurt.
We should have closed the border and thrown Nafta in the trash last week. ... well probably last decade.
Very cool — Thank you! I’ll have to look this over tomorrow as I’m getting tired now. :)
I think it’s mostly #2.
You bet. These people that make profits off Mexico could care less if this killed off a million Americans. Plain and simple, they only care about their profits.
