The "swine flu" that has infected more than 1,000 people in Mexico has led a lawmaker on the House Homeland Security Committee to call on U.S. officials to close the southern border.
Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) said the border should be closed until the threat is resolved.
"The public needs to be aware of the serious threat of swine flu, and we need to close our borders to Mexico immediately and completely until this is resolved," Massa said in a statement.
"I am making this announcement because I see this as a serious threat to the health of the American public and I do not believe this issue is receiving the attention it needs to have in the news," Massa said.

Was swine flu planted in Mexico to assure the political will to actually seal the US borders against illegal entry?
I just figured you were from Brooklyn, or Queens.

Geraldo would see this as another instance of “His panic”.
He’d have us believe there’s no statistical difference between native born Americans spreading plagues than Mexicans/ as always he’s an equal opportunity “employer”.
Let no crisis go to waste. It will be far easier to close our borders in the face of a pandemic threat (whether it actually is as dangerous as it is made out to be or not) and while people are clamoring for it to be done, than it will be when the 'domestic security force' is roaming the streets and Americans want to leave.
I am all for shutting down illegal immigration, but it appears a significant number of the vectors worldwide were not illegals, but tourists.
We need to be careful just what is done and how it is implemented. Dashing off and stuffing some dangerous legislation through without reading the fine print already has this country going deeper in debt to the central bank by the day with no accountability.
Using that same dynamic to impose travel restrictions inter- or intra- nationally is dangerous to our Republic's future.
Boy, He’s QUICK! /s
If the borders are completely shut how do our goods get to Mexico and theirs to us? That’s how it complicates commerce.
I’m all for securing the border so we can control who comes and goes as best as possible but totally shutting the border down (except for rare occasions like pandemic or war) is the last thing we should do.
This has nothing to do with illegal immigration. It only takes one legal immigrant or foreign tourist or a returning American Tourist from abroad to carry a deadly contagion to spark a pandemic here. By the time we noticed they were ill they would have already infected dozens who then each infected dozens themselves and so on.
Unless you want to permanently bar any foreigner from ever coming here and our citizens from traveling outside of the country you will never EVER be able to prevent a virus from coming here.
Oh yeah! Most people infected here are Americans who have returned from travel to Mexico, not from illegal immigrants.
You could recall every American servicemen from over seas and activate the entire reserve and guard and put them on the border and nothing will change.
This thing has a several day incubation period. Any American who has been to Mexico in the past 7-10 days is potentially infected and has probably already infected numerous people who are infecting numerous people and so forth.
The whole notion of quarantining a pandemic these days is nothing but a feel good idea the Government put’s out to give the impression that they are in control and can control it.
In the day and age of mass global travel and commerce, you just can’t isolate these things.
Too late.
Won't happen with the dems in charge of both houses.

spreading the RINOvirus.
Barn Door.... Horse missing...you fill in the rest.
Close the border and embargo produce coming in from May-hee-ko.
I check origin of produce at supermarket (and Trader Joe’s) routinely and will not buy any from May-hee-ko... that means almost all tomatoes. Grow your own.
What are you planning next year? A cruise off the Somali coast? I bet the rates are really cheap.
I think oil is a key factor in our lax attitude towards illegal invasion from Mexico, as well as the cheap labor.....
Thanks for the info!
