Son’s 2nd shot kills intruder (Mississippi)

Javorous Darnell Tims, 20

PASCAGOULA — A woman, awakened by the sound of someone removing the screen from her bedroom window, got out of her bed at 1 a.m. Friday, walked to her son’s room and quietly woke him.

“She said, ‘Snigg get up,’” the son said in an interview later Friday morning.

“I got up, grabbed my gun and went to the corner there by her room,” he said, standing at the door of the apartment, on the bottom floor of the last in a row of Spanish-style buildings in the Granada Apartments on Chicot Road.

It was dark in the apartment, but the window was backlit, Snigg said. He heard the window go up and saw a man coming in.

“He stuck his hand under and pulled the blinds back, the blinds and the curtain,” he said. “And he eased in like he was attempting to come in.

“I fired two shots, then he ran off,” Snigg said.

Police say they won’t identify the woman or her son, who offered the nickname Snigg, for fear of retribution.

Javorous Darnell Tims, 20, ran about 80 feet from the window, fell to the sidewalk and died of a single gunshot wound, police said Friday.

Pascagoula police said Snigg and his mother acted appropriately, “taking the actions they felt necessary to protect themselves.” However, because a man died, the case will be presented to a grand jury for review.

I can’t believe this didn’t get pinged out to the MS list. I saw it yesterday when I briefly jumped on my blackberry while coaching the youth bowling kids. The BB is great for just reading stuff but it isn’t a great tool for posting.

When we finished at the bowling center, CDBear and I went to the gun shop. We have spent most of our waking time since then playing with the new toys.

Yall, it’s so cool. For the first time in her life, CDBear slept with a pistol — HER pistol — on her bedside table. And for the record, she’s a pretty danged good shot. She kept, and has been showing off, her first target to all who will look.

I’m so proud of her that I won’t mention what new toys I got... at least not in this post.

I love it!!! My wife sleeps with a weapon too... just in case an intruder wakes her before they wake me! She is very good with a hand gun and not bad with long guns. Congrats to you both! A dead intruder is a good intruder.

The Castle Doctrine will assure that this is just a legal formality. In Mississippi... if you feel that your life is threatened in your home or on your property (and your auto is an extension of your home) you have the right to use deadly force... IF you feel that your life or lives are threatened. Thank you Haley Barbour!

I have tried for many years to get her to take this step. She has steadfastly refused to get anywhere near a firearm until now.

We spent the afternoon a week ago Saturday at the gun shop and range where she tried on a number of different pistols and shot almost all of a box of 9mm ammo.

Yesterday, we went back and did some more shopping and more shooting before she decided on the Walther P22. It doesn’t have the knock down power I would have chosen but for a first weapon, a good choice. And with 20 of her first 30 rounds inside a 3 inch circle, we are both comfortable with her ability to put down any problem.

Today, we spent about 3 hours and a large part of a 500 round brick practicing in our back yard range at 25, 50 and 75 feet. She’s pretty good and has yet to turn the laser site on. She ran out of gas before it got dark enough to be able to use it. That will be fun.

In case anybody is wondering how powerful a .22 cal hyper velocity round is, I can tell you. From a 3 inch barrel Walter pistol at ranges from 25 feet to 50 yards, a 36 grain hollow-point penetrates 4 inches of oak with plenty of dirt kicked up behind it. We were using 2 2x12 planks padded with an inch of cardboard in front of a dirt berm. The rounds were blowing chunks out of both planks with plenty of power on the back end.

And what she did to that overripe apple was just awesome!!

Guys, if you don’t go shooting with your girls, you are missing some of the most fun yall can have with your clothes on.

Not a smart move in Mississippi.

Why? Because the perp was black? It was dark in the place, and even though the window was backlit, Snigg wouldn't have known what color the person was.

Very fine weapon and congrats again! Most people that never have been around firearms cannot believe the fun that they are their first time out! I have converted more than a few.

I’m in Ocean Springs now, south of I-10.

I'm 2 blocks off 90. Ever hear of The Shingle Mill?
