(CNN) -- Venezuela will give a 300-acre island in the Delaware River to the state of New Jersey, the governor's office announced.
The Venezuelan-owned Citgo Petroleum Corp. had bought Petty's Island -- between Camden, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- to use as a fuel storage facility.
The island is home to a pair of American bald eagles as well as several great blue herons and state-endangered black-crowned night herons, New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine said in a news release Wednesday.
Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez announced the island's transfer as part of Wednesday's Earth Day celebrations. Plans are being finalized for the transition, which will not occur before 2020, Corzine's office said.

Yikes. An island between Philly and Camden is like an island between two big steaming piles of doody. No wonder they’re giving it away.
2020
Already working on his legacy I see...
Quite frankly, I was quite surprised to learn that Venezuela had rights to land between two of our states. I guess I’m naive about how things work internationally.
“as part of Wednesday’s Earth Day celebrations”
vomit, vomit, yarg, barf, vomit, bleeeuuugghhh.
Sorry. I had to expurge that premise.
Venezuela owns Citgo. Citgo owns the island. The US and NJ are sovereign over the island. Venezuela has no government power over the island, only ownership.
A communist giving something to a Democrat controlled government. Who’d a thought!!!
Chavez is such a warm and cuddly guy. Ask the Obamanation.
Geez, Jersey’s taxes are even scaring away Chavez!
Can we move all the leftists there?
I think that the island already is in New Jersey. It belonged to Citgo, which was nationalized by Venezuela.
Citgo gasoline sales have been hurt by US consumer boycotts, so they don’t really need the island anymore.
I propose that we use this island as a substitute for Guantanamo, and install Corzine as the first resident. The eagles can then freely deposit their droppings on him and the other residents.
This is hilariously funny. Back in 2005 Corzine and other NJ State and Camden county Democrats were lobbyied by NJ’s watermelon advocacy groups to use eminent domain procedures against Citgo to take over Petty’s Island.
Fast forward to 2008 and 2009, and the former head of the NJ DEP who pushed for Eminent Domain process against Citgo for Petty’s Island is now the head of the US Federal EPA.
Looks like Chavez was cornered into surrendering the land to eminent domain and being shown a hypocrite if his Citgo objected or sued, or pull off the optimum PR coup possible and hand over the island as a “friendly gesture.”
Looks like Lisa P. Jackson pulled off one more small coup as she stepped up to the Federal EPA.
