Texas Governor Rick Perry Threatens Secession From The Union (Austin, Texas Tea Party)

Speaking at an anti-tax protest yesterday, the Texas governor brought up the fact that Texas had the right to secede from the union if thing in Washington got bad enough.

Now before we go further, let's set a little background:

Texans are fiercely prideful. You've probably seen the phrase "Don't Mess with Texas" before. It was originally meant to be an anti-littering slogan, but Texans have turned the phrase into a catch-all statement of the state's independent spirit.

Texans like to talk about independence and the fact that it's been part of six countries in its history.

That being said, it might be fun to daydream about what an independent Texas state would be like. There's a whole host of great country songs that could be its national anthem. Like, perhaps, Waltz Across Texas or All My Exes Live in Texas.

If it did secede, we hope that they can come up with something regarding Texas atheletics, so that the football teams can still participate in the NCAA. It'd be boring for the University of Texas (disclosure: my alma matter) to just beat up on Texas A&M every Saturday.

Here's one thing we do know. An independent nation of Texas would be energy independent.

Specifically, with respect to the supply of Oil and Gas. Would an independent Texas be able to produce enough oil and gas to serve its own population, with some left over for export ? Indeed it would. In fact, Texas produces more oil than any other state and accounts for 19.7% of total US output. Texas also produces more than 30% of US natural gas supply. Texas does consume a goodly portion of its own oil output, about 75% of what it produces. But, it only consumes half of its own natural gas production.

I strongly suspect that several states will attempt this in the coming year or so. People are more fed up than I have ever seen them and the media is throwing fuel on the fire by ignoring it.

I agree. If I could only choose between the two then Perry would be it. Don’t like KBH one bit. And this is from a woman voter!

I wholeheartedly support secession. The Civil War got sidetracked by the Emancipation Proclamation and the States’ Rights question got muddled with the slavery question. Unquestionably slaver would have died in the Confederate States in a very short time after they seceded. The result would have been much better for all concerned, because the Confederate States would have had the responsibility for resolving racism, and the anti-slave states would not have been tarred with the same brush.

Be that as it may, I don’t see any other resolution to the current free vs. government slave, Constitution Vs. liberal fascism situation, other than to have the free parts opf America split from the liberal fascist parts.

This time it will be done correctly.

And it won’t be by States, it will be by counties within states. For example, almost all of California is held by Free Americans. The Lib-fascists control only LA, the SF Bay Area, the city of Sacramento, and the coast + 20 miles inland up to the Oregon border. They have more people, but very little territory. Same in most of the East Coast States.

I support Free Texas, and if they secede, I will move there!

On problem is the the Supreme Court has said that states, once they join the Union, cannot secede. The case is Texas v. White (1879). The Court said:

When, therefore, Texas became one of the United States, she entered into an indissoluble relation. All the obligations of perpetual union, and all the guaranties of republican government in the Union, attached at once to the State. The act which consummated her admission into the Union was something more than a compact; it was the incorporation of a new member into the political body. And it was final. The union between Texas and the other States was as complete, as perpetual, and as indissoluble as the union between the original States. There was no place for reconsideration or revocation, except through revolution or through consent of the States.

Considered therefore as transactions under the Constitution, the ordinance of secession, adopted by the convention and ratified by a majority of the citizens of Texas, and all the acts of her legislature intended to give effect to that ordinance, were absolutely null. They were utterly without operation in law. The obligations of the State, as a member of the Union, and of every citizen of the State, as a citizen of the United States, remained perfect and unimpaired. It certainly follows that the State did not cease to be a State, nor her citizens to be citizens of the Union. . . . .

So, like to or not, we are stuck with each other.

“The Fed has become a monster and must be whittled back to its constitutional limits.”

I played an old Steppenwolf song yesterday “Monster-Suicide-America”.
It's amazing how appropriate it is to these times!

(Monster)
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And ‘til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

The blue and gray they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog

And though the past has its share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But its protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

(Suicide)
The spirit was freedom and justice
And its keepers seemed generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
‘Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin’

Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin’ the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
‘Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
‘Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

(America)
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

Problem is, the libs have most of California's industrial economy, water resources and ports. Free Americans have mostly desert and prime MJ growing areas.

Not really. It was decided for that particular conflict. While it has some minor bearing on the future its not cast in stone for sure.

Serious question: were Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, & the other Founders practicing sedition against the British government? Would you have been a Tory then, i.e. supporting the British against the Founders? Don’t give a kneejerk answer - you might not be housing British troops in your house, but you are housing Leftist constituencies with your involuntary taxes in slums across the nation. In other words, convince me that the Founders, if alive today, would not have already drafted the Declaration of Independence and sent it to D.C.

Texas already fought one war to be rid of Mexican tyranny. Texas gets 96 cents for every $1 we send to the Feds. Texas would be energy independent and a net exporter of natural gas and oil. I think NY would end up freezing if Texas decided to cut off NG supplies - NY would be more likely to become part of Canada before Texas becomes part of Mexico.

Were there any Texans on that court, or was this a court packed with Reconstruction-era judges less than a generation after the Civil War?

To be blunt, this ruling has no more power than a ruling by the House of Lords in 1776.
