I ditto your sentiments. I can envision a photo being passed around the internet with Obama and IHS overhead. The headline would read, Catholics believe O is the messiah.
While I'm sorrowful that he was allowed to speak at the university, I'm grateful the inscription was covered up.

The upper case Greek eta is written “H”. The substitution of the Latin S for sigma is a convention that emerged in the linguistic gumbo of the Mediterranean basin. Perhaps you are aware that sigma also is written with a C, esp. in late antiquity and the Byzantine period.
There is not much Greek left in the Latin church, but it has not been completely eliminated.
“Symbology” is a very recent coinage. Dan Brown, I think.
Why would Obama interject himself into Georgetown and Notre Dame when it is pretty obvious that he has no respect for anything either one of them represents

As to the second, these institutions have alrady been largely subverted throughout the course of the last several decades, and I can only suppose that his insertion at this point is to ensure that such subversion is total, complete and irrevocable...

I know that H in Greek is eta. My point was that S written as a Latin S is neither the C often used in Eastern icons, or the sigma used in inscriptions.
That said, others have made the point that since it can be either, why not consider it both. I’m okay with that, though I’m fairly sure that the usage was meant as ‘In hoc signo’ when it was put in.
I have only read Brown’s most famous book. If I picked the word up, it was from somewhere else. There’s no need to drive-by about it.

That is absolute weak sauce. Obama was speaking at a Catholic College and CHOSE to speak there. Take the environment as is or go someplace else.
As for the Georgetown Catholics, Mat. 10:32-33 hangs over there heads. The fact that they were a Catholic institution escaped their earthly conforming beings and bowed down to the request at the expense of the Truth.
Obama wants to speak there, whatever, but to cover up who you represent is a greater offense and a huge sign of weakness.
