First of all, unlimited government vs. anarchy is a false dichotomy. Secondly, theoretically defenders of anarchy don’t imagine it being a state of everyone at war with everyone else. Whenever someone usues violence to extract what he wants from others, he is taking on himself the authority of government, which automatically means he no longer lives in a state of anarchy. For government is nothing more than organized violence, as we all know. I’d say Somalia has far too much government, if anything.
The trick is to make it so that no one can use violence, or the threat of violence, to upset things too far. Conservative Americans seek to do so by having a central government, granting it a legal monopoly on most forms of violence (keeping for ourselves the right to defend ourselves and our property with violence if need be), and limiting it to a written constitution.
The problem is, the bigger the government grows, the more likely it is to disrupt things, just like when there is no central government to crush all the little purveyors of violence (i.e. what people usually call “anarchy”). it’s called the problem of liberty. Look it up.
