Dealing with Pirates 101:

Judi McLeod

April 13, 2009

imageNow that courageous US Navy Seals have been able to what they have been wanting to do for days, it’s time for Dealing With Pirates 101.

Barack Obama wants help from other countries in making Somali pirates accountable:  The US Armed Forces already have the proven ability to deal with them.

Obama and Hillary Clinton should stop calling the pirates “criminals” and tag them for what they are, Terrorists.

Obama should have no difficulty identifying the Somali pirates for what they are:

How many of our "allies" have sent COMBAT troops into Afghani(stan)?

Quite a few, actually. They've been over there for as long as we've been over there.

sorry but this is just impossible, because to reach this the US would have to accept the same standart for other nations too. (will not happen). Just imagine a chinese freighter entering a US port and their crew is armed to the teeth. US will not accept that.

Currently, when a ship approaches a harbor anywhere, it is met by a boat, a harbor pilot comes aboard, and the pilot guides the ship to the appropriate dock. If a ship had guns aboard, part of the harbor pilot's job could be to put a lock on the arms locker, which would be removed when the ship left port.

This pirate incident simply shows how Obama will handle a terrorist crisis.

You have a good take on this, try to remove the military angle and insert domestic judicial process instead.

I could say that if Obama sets it up all commanders must have a political officer on board to get approval before they do anything.

Seems like that was the way Russia did things, have a political officer on board the ships and subs, the captain could do nothing unless approved by that politruk.

I believe - tho I certainly could be wrong - that the law for pirates is pretty much established.

That is, if captured, executed on the spot.

Or is that more of a "guidelline" than a rule??

Ditto. The Seals are great and did good job but that’s what they train for. I fail to see how shooting a pirate from a perfectly safe location makes one courageous or heroic. It was an extremely difficult task and I’m glad they executed it perfectly but I think the ships captain was the courageous one.

I was listening to Rush last week and he quoted the former captain of the USS Cole;

LIPPOLD: First, we're not negotiating with terrorists; we're negotiating with pirates. Piracy is a business opportunity. They have a very effective business model. Obviously a terrorist is someone who tries to deter and disrupt for a political goal and to wreak havoc and terror on a society. Pirates, on the other hand, are stopping these vessels so that they can hold them for ransom. It's a very effective business model. The shipping industry and the insurance companies have given in to their demands numerous times over the years, and so consequently it is a criminal activity, not a terrorist activity.

And after hearing the great news that the pirates received bullets through their heads, I immediately thought of this quote. Turns out not to be so "effective" when this business model is applied on Americans. It might work on wimpy Europeans, but rule number one of business: KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER!

Alas, sailing vessels can carry pirates too.

Any smart Somali fisherman is going to be armed anyhow, so he doesn’t get pirated himself.

DUMB PIRATES

The Somali pirates let a US Navy destroyer put a tow line on their rickety enclosed lifeboat??????

NOW THEY'RE DEAD DUMB PIRATES

So what'd the US Navy say to get the three pirates to stick their heads out the porthole...... so that US Navy snipers could pick them off?

ROTFL.

Why even call them terrorists? Let’s call them pirates and kill them.

That was my first thought. How in the heck did that happen. And, while they were setting up the tow they must have been awfully close - enough for the seals to go in.

This is just a guess-——

...........but it appears to me we were trying to gain the confidence of the pirates-—trying to make them think they were in control, to put them at ease-—while we were preparing for the snipers to strike.

The towline was apparently supposed to be “helping” prevent the lifeboat straying into dangerous rough waters.

Might have got them to pop out of the porthole by yelling something about the towline getting loose.

ROTFL.

Dumb bunnies fell for it.

Or,

Report: Pirates were out of ammo, sought to trade captain

They knew they were out of ammo. Kind of takes the wind out of Odumbnuts' sails.
