LINCOLN, Nebraska, April 9, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of the Lincoln Diocese today made public his condemnation of the Notre Dame scandal. His comments bring the number of U.S. bishops to 30 protesting the school's invitation to President Obama to speak at commencement and receive an honorary law degree May 17.

Bishop Bruskewitz supplied the letter addressed to University president Fr. John Jenkins today to the Cardinal Newman Society, who is hosting a petition against the scandal, now bearing well over a quarter million signatures (http://www.notredamescandal.com).

"Permit me to add my name as well to the long list of Bishops of the Catholic Church who are utterly appalled at your dedication to immorality and wrong-doing represented by your support for the obscenity called 'The Vagina Monologues' and your absolute indifference to the murderous abortion program and beliefs of this President of the United States," reads the brief letter, dated April 3.

"The fact that you have some sort of past connection with the State of Nebraska makes it all the more painful that the Catholic people here have to see your betrayal of the moral teachings of the Catholic Church," Bruskewitz wrote.  "I can assure you of my prayers for your conversion, and for the conversion of your formerly Catholic University."

"Faithful Catholics will be thankful for Bishop Bruskewitz's clear and pointed criticism of the abuse of Catholic identity at Notre Dame and should remain vigilant in their prayers for an end to the scandal," commented Patrick J. Reilly, president of The Cardinal Newman Society.

The bishops who have so far gone public with their disapproval of Notre Dame's invitation of Obama (in alphabetical order) are:

12. Cardinal Francis George - Chicago, IL; President, USCCB
13. Archbishop José Gomez - San Antonio, TX
14. Bishop William Higi - Lafayette, IN
15. Archbishop Alfred Hughs - New Orleans, LA
16. Bishop Jerome Listecki - La Crosse, WI

EVERY bishop should either publicly condemn Notre Dame or be removed.

Is it Obamamania or fear of offending Democrats that holds back the other bishops?

Bishop Bruskewitz is my favorite. I love how he’s not quite as diplomatic as the other bishops — he actually uses words like “appalled,” “obscenity,” and “murderous,” and says he’ll pray for the conversion of Fr. Jenkins.

I have to hand it to these guys for sticking to their faith and their principles.

If only more Americans and more Christians would do the same!

They’re serving/pleasing the wrong master, that’s all.

The world (ie, Satan) has put forth the “doctrine” of “the social gospel”, and these deluded souls have sucked it right up.

Some time spent in the Word is in order.

Nutshell.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan - New York, NY

He has not yet been installed, so this does not count for NY. As expected, not one bishop from this state.

JMO ... but I have to think that these bishops are shooting themselves in the foot over this.

Universities always try to get big names to speak at their commencements, the President of the United States always being the crowning jewel, no matter who he happens to be.

Had they simply sighed and let Obama just go speak at ND, it would have been an utterly forgettable event, and it would have had no impact whatever on anything.

Instead, they're making it a media circus, the result of which is a bunch of folks who are scratching their heads at the level of outrage expressed by these bishops. All these guys are doing, in fact, is making the Catholic position on abortion look silly.

If anything, they're strengthening the pro-aborts' political position.

Another “nutshell” proclaimation by a priest, prior to the election:

“voting for Obama constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil”

Talk about obtuse! Only Catholics are debarred. That is to use the letter of the document against the spirit. By his logic , the university is free to invite and honor a high official who is non-Catholic even though he has just taken actions—as Obama has— that are abhorrent to the Catholic Church. The purpose of the ban was to emphasize the gravity of the crime, not merely to punish straying Catholic pols.

Yeah, they think they can trade off the unborn for these other “social justice” issues. Healthcare and minimum wage.
For some it was the Iraq war. Very sloppy reasoning. The Kmiec argument. Essentially, they want to surrender the Catholic position on cultural and moral issues.

All these guys are doing, in fact, is making the Catholic position on abortion look silly.

Objecting to killing viable babies who are outside the womb is "silly"? Obama doesn't even stop at abortion; he favors infanticide against the survivors. You have a country that's not content to murder its own children, it's now busy exporting child murder to the rest of the world on the taxpayer's dime, and objecting to that is "silly"?

If you think that's "silly," fine, but we have nothing to say to each other.

It’s simply accepting the lies of Satan.
The Bible is rather clear on whose responsibility it is to take care of the poor and needy. And it’s not Caesar.

Are you nuts? The bishops are finally, finally displaying backbone when we most need it. This isn’t just any Catholic university and the scandal must be addressed. Thank Heaven for these men. Who cares if there is a media circus? In the larger fight of right vs. wrong this is a big battle, and banking on a big name and “Catholic identity” isn’t going to cut it.
