The Valkyrie' actor started plans to produce the 60s western - which is about two lovable bank robbers - last year and hopes to star in the with his close friend John Travolta.
A source said: "It has been a pet project of his that has been on the back-burner for years. But now he's ready to go, and will most likely happily eschew the enormous salary that he normally commands."
When the movie goes ahead Tom will revive the role of Sundance - previously played by Robert Redford - and John, 55, is expected to play Cassidy.
A friend told Britain's Daily Mirror: "Butch and Sundance is a labour of love for Tom. He was eight years old when he saw the original and it made an impression that has stayed with him all his life. He can't wait to get to work."

Obviously, you’ve lowered the bar for a “true classic” quite a bit.
You’d have to pay her $10 million up front and get her movie career going. That’s the deal all his wives get. After so many kids/years your servitude is up.
Gay.
I never did see that one.
But I’m certain they should leave well enough alone here.
I wonder what ever happened with the planned “Dallas” Movie starring Travolta as JR.
Which? "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" or Brokeback Mountain?
The former is a classic, the latter garbage.
As to Travolta, I liked him in his first few roles (e.g. "Welcome Back, Kotter" and "Grease.") After that, he became the posterchild of over-exposure.
At last report, the “Dallas” movie was cancelled. It still has an entry on IMDb and “release” date of 2010.

This was likely to be a “comedy.”
Oh, that’s even better. They can play “grease lighting” instead of “raindrops”.
“Which? “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” or Brokeback Mountain?”
Well either but I was referring to Butch and Sundance. I have no intention of ever seeing Brokebutt. “Romance” films are boring enough when one half of the couple is a pretty girl.
Travolta has had his acting moments, like Pulp Fiction, but he’s creepy.
Vomit. I fail to see how it would work as a movie anyway. I heard the plan was to make Ewing Oil “the world’s largest energy company”.
A comedy would be disgusting.
