Fox's Van Susteren Vulnerable to Beck's Success, Palin Ties
Around the Net in Media ^ | Tuesday, March 31, 2009 9:31

Greta Van Susteren, a Fox News prime-time host, is being scrutinized for a questionably close relationship to Sarah Palin.

It seems that Van Susteren's husband, John Coates, is a political adviser to the Alaska governor.

Questions about the Palin link, combined with the overnight success of Glenn Beck at Fox News, makes observers wonder if Beck might soon get Van Susteren's spot.

Insiders say Beck has already been viewed as a possible replacement for Van Susteren, who represents the weakest link in Fox's otherwise indomitable lineup.

Van Susteren's ratings are getting smashed by Beck, whose show, despite airing in the ghetto that is 5 p.m., is already the network's third-highest-rated program.

So far, Fox says the switch won't happen, in part, because the network has always had a woman in its prime-time lineup and Fox News chief Roger Ailes is reluctant to change that

Hmmmmm, well I think we’re at a stale-mate here.

We agree to disagree.

I have Beck whenever I want him, DVR's are soo easy to use, time slots should not matter.

Besides that, if you have DirectTV you can add it to the DVR from any internet connection away from home. Super slick.

One thing you’re forgetting. O’Deadly failed at radio.

'Deadly only announced his radio show debut after Rush lost his hearing, he thought Rush was over, and he would ascend to the EIB throne. Middle of the road talk is only moderately successful, Lefty radio has never succeeded.

I think Greta is just fine as she is. She is a woman phisophically on the left side, but seems to be fair-minded. I enjoy her show for quite some time now. I also think she's seeing a bit of light here and there. More power to her.

I think this is just MSM jealosy, misdirection .... in other words, just their normal CRAP.

who should get a Sunday night commentary show and bump Geraldo's useless hour into a black hole somewhere.

Why stop at Geraldo's hour, I'd give her the entire Sunday.

Shemp is the Fox weakest link.

True. They should get Larry or Moe.

It seems that Van Susteren's husband, John Coates, is a political adviser to the Alaska governor.

It seems that Andrea Mitchell of NBC is married to Alan Greenspan.

It seems that Barbara Walters of ABC has the hots for Fidel Castro, who has killed more people than Charles Manson.

It seems that George Stephanopoulos of ABC is in bed with Rahm Emanuel, James Carville, and Paul Begala of CNN.

Yeah, I want to see Van Susteren get her legs broken, right after these other people, who have had these other compromising relationships and/or enthusiasms for years.

"What do you base that on (re: Schultz)?"

Sorry, I forgot to put my (sarc) button on.

Ed Schultz (sp?) won't last long. Not because he's a lefty but because he is just plain stupid.

If anything he'd move Hannity to 10, go OReilly, Beck, Hannity.

Hey! Haven't you heard about the "Fairness Doctrine"? That's too many white guys.

Fox will have to knock off all three of them and give their slots to Leonard Pitts and Julianne Malveaux.

<ducks>

Ed Schultz (sp?) won't last long. Not because he's a lefty but because he is just plain stupid.

Schultz was on in the evening on a local AM outlet where I could hear his stuff, a few years ago. He's a rah-rah, hearty-headbashing union guy. He comes across like a shop steward from years ago, with hints of butchness. He was obviously the left's answer for, or imitation of, Rush.

The problem with Schultz's act is that it's hard to believe anymore in a struggling brotherhood of union organizers trying to stand up to the Four Hundred and their Pinkerton goon squads, when you have the Clintons, their political machine, and their body trail so prominent in public life, and Mob lizards with their paws all over union funds and leaders. The Teamsters? Oh, yeah -- Tony Pro and da guyz dat disappeared Hoffa -- you godda prollem widdat? The UMW? Yeah, Tony Boyle and a very dead Jock Yablonski.

Schultz won't play because his prototype disappeared with the Teamsters' retirement funds and Jimmy Hoffa.

Dats the one!

Thanks you for unclogging my mental block.

She's better looking than Geraldo, too, as we can see from your pic.

Nobody mentioned Hannity? He’s the weakest link to me. I am tired of him, he’s so partisan it’s boring. Replace Hannity with Beck and watch the ratings explode on FOX.

I agree. They need to get rid of Shepherd Smith, I do not like his style. Change the channel as soon as he comes on.

Up until Sarah came along, I would have said dump Greta. But since then, I've grown to like Greta. Not only because she treats the Palins well, but her show in general has gotten away from the tabloid journalism which previously dominated the show. She no longer has the same cadre of smarmy attorneys and forensic pathologists on nightly like she used to.

Now, I would definitely vote to get rid of Shep to make room for Beck.

Van Susteren knows how to listen. She is professional in the legal aspect of her show which of course is mother bird over a panel of geared up legal eagles/experts. She knows her central point, keeps the discussion in focus, does not stoop to name calling, is polite to both sides and will step in if she feels a "fraud" alert from anyone.

Beck takes on any issue and drums it to death. He will admit he is not an expert, but to hear him talk he is the expert. I like Glenn, but I can be bored with Glenn as well. He is his own show and but would rather go it alone. He plays his guest like a boxer in the ring. It's about the win.

Greta on the other hand is for one who wants to know all aspects of a case or the story she is covering, she freely shares the stage--the Palin's were covered professionally by Greta bringing interest to Palin's husband's sport of snowmobiling. She captured Todd as a regular North Country guy. Greta was the only one that really introduced you to the Palin family as they really were-regular folk. Whatever her politics are she doesn't wear it on her sleeve. She covered the family in a professional manner going outside the studio to their comfort zone. Greta was in her element as well. Beck would of whined who in their right mind would live in Alaska.

Beck repeats he is not educated and tells how humble he is with tears coming to his eyes on various subject, choking up. He produces a film for one day theater going. A new genre in film. I guess they sell well, as Dr. Laura is doing the same now. He knows how to play to an audience. He knows how to push his "book" on a sweater at Christmas. Beck is his own best advertiser.

It's Beck's way or no way. Quick to say he was not liked at his former network and adored by Fox.He's a conservative or libertarian (likes to really stay in mold of the "Party of Beck") and grabs the audience who already have their minds made up and charged up on any given subject--he just leads the pack of hungry wolves to the hunt. Beck really shares the "gift of cult" as a ring master like Obama.

Beck and Van Susteren too different animals. Greta seems content in her own skin; whereas, Beck works hard to tell you he is.

How I see it.

Now, Brit Hume has class without all the flash.

We had Schultz on the radio for 4 weeks here. He couldn't get any sponsors except the PA Teachers Union and they quit.

Beck and Hannity both are overplayed on radio..and television in one day. Too much..so I tune out. The topic of the day is...then beat it to death. And probably FR discussed it two days beforehand and sent it to the above. So..so much for originality of content.

I think Greta has gotten better with time. I watch her now and that wasn’t true in the past.
