Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) backed the plan for GM and Chrysler put forth yesterday by President Obama, the candidate Romney may face in the 2012 presidential election.
"I think a lot of people expected the president just to cave, write a check, and just hope for the better," Romney said Tuesday morning on CNN. "I think he's expressing some backbone on this."
Romney grew up in Michigan, where his father was governor and, at one time, chairman of a now-defunct auto company. The former 2008 presidential candidate, though, was also sure to tout his own calls for bankruptcy last year, when Chrysler and GM first approached the government seeking support.
"That's something I think he should have said months ago," Romney claimed. "There were a number of us who said bankruptcy or a bankruptcy-like process was something that was needed to get GM and Chrysler on their feet again."
Romney, who won the Michigan Republican primary during the 2008 nominating process, called for the use of the "club" of bankruptcy to force the restructuring of the state's native industry.

Well, we’ve elected one president based on skin color, I guess greased hair is just as good of a reason.
We can use his hair as a missile defense shield...
Save billions....
In all fairness, you’re correct. I inferred from the article what my bias wanted me to think.
I made a mistake and I apologize for it.
Dream on. Romney just praised the fact that a man who has never run a lemonade stand, just directed, in the name of the government, the firing of a CEO of large corporation. Anyone who praises such an act already has one foot in the Marxist camp.
This places Obama, Romney and the majority of FR posters all on the same page;
Time for GM bancruptcy.
Let’s make sure our candidate is someone like Palin or Jindal!
Perhaps a discussion about the merits of what he said would be in order rather than just another excuse to bash Romney. I don't begrudge anyone re: their opinions about Romney even though I may disagree. But, does anyone here really feel that Obama letting GM go into BK is a bad thing? I certainly don't, & called for it from the onset. It's a good thing when a socialist like Obama comes around to our thinking, even if it was somewhat forced.
Pile-on-anything-Romney... Plain and simple.
Well said.
I ‘would’ have much rather had Romney in the White House than the disgusting country wrecking ass that’s contaminating the place now.
However, this was very stupid of Romney and I believe he just broke his own political backbone.
It’s like saying a guy that is about to jump off of a bridge is a good planner, has keen foresight, and is showing his bravery.
I don’t care what he says now, that’s not going to come off of his boot.
Amen!
Let the GOP have Palin.
With Palin family values ... she fits right in with the other RHINO’s. She tells YOU how to raise your kids and look at her kids - Bristol - another unwed mother still in high school - Way to go Mom!
maybe because Obama doesn’t want bankruptcy because he is against the bailout mentality and now believes the free market should sort things out. He wants bankruptcy so that the govt could take over the company completely.
Yes, but I don’t think we agreed that the POTUS should fire the CEO and choose a handpicked successor.
Plus, he doesn’t have to praise that enemy of Capitalism and America. He could say, “Well, it is way too late, but I’m glad the President has finally realized what Republicans have been saying from the beginning, that GM should go through bankruptcy.” or something like that.
Romney, until now, has been the most consistent critic of the Clintons and Obama that I've seem coming out of any politician... This is his way of saying... "see, I told you, we were proposing this long ago"...
“She tells YOU how to raise your kids”
how?
Romney didn’t say that. YOU did. YOU put words out of context
I’m not so sure. We might be better off with an open Socialist, than a closet one like Mitt, pushing Socialism in the name of Conservatism.
“Exactly... but, anti-Mormon hate (that’s what it is, at its core, plain and simple)”
and if you say anything critical of Obama...you must be a racist.
