Schindler Family Attends Mass for Terri Schiavo Hosted by Ave Maria University
Life News ^ | 4/1/09 | Steven Ertelt

St. Petersburg, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The Schindler family attended a special Mass on Tuesday, which marked the fourth anniversary of the painful starvation and dehydration euthanasia death of Terri Schiavo. Ave Maria University, a Florida-based Catholic college, hosted the mass, which saw the entire Schindler family attend.

Bob and Mary Schindler, Terri's parents, joined their other children Bobby Schindler and Suzanne Vitadamo for a ceremony in Terri's honor.

As the Schindlers prayed with participants for other disabled people who face the same euthanasia concerns, they placed a picture of Terri on her wedding day on the altar and joined more than 400 people in remembering her life.

The Mass was part of the International Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Terri Schindler Schiavo that the Schindler family jointly co-sponsors with the Terri Schiavo foundation and Priests for Life.

The two organizations established this day last year to foster education, prayer, and activism regarding discrimination against the disabled.

"God is using Terri to impact the world in a very special way," Bobby Schindler told the News Press.

Thomas Monaghan, founder and chancellor of Ave Maria University, told the newspaper the college was happy to help with the ceremony.

“We're very big on pro-life,” he said. “Our purpose is to fight evil and pro-life is center stage, and that’s where we want to be.”

Fr. Frank Pavone, who was with Bobby and Suzanne at Terri’s bedside as she died, recalls that painful day and the support from pro-life advocates and others.

"As we consoled Terri and prayed with her, what I felt most strongly was the presence of countless people around the world who, by their love, prayers, and tears, accompanied Terri and her family through those difficult days," he said. "I am confident that these same individuals, families, and Churches will want to observe Terri’s Day."

Sick Canadian Newborn Whose Parents Want To Use as a Heart Donor Not Terminal

TORONTO, April 9, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A two month-old child at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, described in the media as "dying," has defied doctor's predictions and continued to live after the removal of a respirator. The respirator was removed in the expectation that the child would stop breathing, and that her heart could then be harvested for transplant. Her parents have expressed their disappointment that another child who is being cared for at the hospital will now not receive their daughter's heart. . .

How Abortion Became Fashionable

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA—In his tremendous novel War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy observes that some men “choose their opinions like their clothes—according to fashion.” He adds that no matter how derivative their views are, such men may hold those views with all the passion of partisans.

How true. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard people parrot clichés as if they were voicing their own hard-won, independent convictions. In college, I had more than one professor whose political ideas seemed to have been culled from the bumper stickers in an academic parking lot. (They weren’t grateful when I pointed this out.)

A free mind is a rarity, really. I was reminded of this sad truth by the news that Notre Dame University plans to award an honorary degree to Barack Obama this spring. The ostensible meaning of this gesture is that a Catholic university plans to honor our first black president. Seems simple, no? But another way to look at it is this: A nominally Catholic university is honoring America’s foremost apostle of abortion.

The devil must be cackling. As the great French poet Charles Baudelaire put it: “Satan’s cleverest wile is to make us think he doesn’t exist.” Most educated people nowadays assume he doesn’t exist, which makes them easy prey for him. . .

“You're making our work here difficult!” (PLANNED PARENTHOOD)

ORANGE COUNTY Alejandra in Orange County passed along this amazing report of how one little girl's faith helped to save the life of a baby: "Tim came to me with his daughter and told me that his little girl (about 4 years old) told him before he went to Planned Parenthood, 'Take this plate of cookies and give it to a Mommy. Tell her to keep them so that she can give them to her baby when he is born.'

When Tim approached one of the women that he talked to last Saturday morning, he told her the message of his little daughter. The woman broke into tears and the thought of not being able to give her baby the plate of cookies that Tim's daughter sent her made her decide to keep her baby!"

Homeland Security Report equates 'abortion opponents' with white supremacists

.- According to a Homeland Security Report distributed to law enforcement organizations, abortion opponents are as great a threat to national security in the immediate future as white supremacists.

The nine-page document was sent to police and sheriff's departments across the country on April 7 under the headline, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment." The report is unclassified, but is accompanied by a warning that says it “contains information that may be exempt from public release under the Freedom of Information Act.”

The report was prepared by the Extremism and Radicalization Branch of the Department of Homeland Security and claims it was “coordinated with the FBI.”

“Rightwing extremists,” the document says, “have capitalized on the election of the first African American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal through propaganda, but they have not yet turned to attack planning.”

Nevertheless, according to the report, the combination of a prolonged economic downturn, the election of the first African American President and the return of many veterans with "combat skills" could create an environment similar to the early 90's, which lead to the Oklahoma City bombing.

The report describes "Rightwing extremism" broadly as “those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.”

President Obama’s Health Secretary Nominee Sebelius Hides Abortion Link in Senate Answers

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Barack Obama’s nominee for Health Secretary is coming under criticism for apparently deceiving members of a Senate committee about her close relationship with an abortion practitioner. Sebelius received nearly three times more money from late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller than she disclosed.

Yesterday, the Senate Finance Committee published written answers Sebelius submitted during her examination for confirmation as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

In response to a question from pro-life Sen. Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican, Sebelius stated that she received $12,450 from Tiller during her campaign for Insurance Commissioner.

However, contribution and expenditure reports on file with the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission show the figure to be closer to $38,450 -- a discrepancy of $26,000. Records also show that some of that money was used for her 2002 campaign for governor.

'HELL ON EARTH'- German Bishop Links Nazi Crimes to Atheism

In an Easter sermon that has drawn widespread criticism, the Catholic bishop of Augsburg has linked the crimes committed under Nazi and Communist regimes to atheism. Atheist groups have reacted with fury and accuse the cleric of rewriting history.

A Catholic German bishop has come under fire for his remarks condemning atheists. In a sermon given on Easter Sunday, the bishop of Augsburg, Walter Mixa, warned of rising atheism in Germany. "Wherever God is denied or fought against, there people and their dignity will soon be denied and held in disregard," he said in the sermon. He also said that "a society without God is hell on earth" and quoted the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "If God does not exist, everything is permitted."

Most controversially, he linked the Nazi and Communist crimes to atheism. "In the last century, the godless regimes of Nazism and Communism, with their penal camps, their secret police and their mass murder, proved in a terrible way the inhumanity of atheism in practice." Christians and the Church were always the subject of "special persecution" under these systems, he said. . .

Irish Protestors Shut Down Speech by "Involuntary Euthanasia" Activist

CORK, Ireland April 17, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - When a British professor of medical ethics was slated to speak at Cork University Hospital (CUH) in Ireland advocating legalising euthanasia, including "involuntary euthanasia," he did not expect to be met with an angry group of Irish patriots determined to see him off in the name of their nation's constitution.

Professor Len Doyal, emeritus professor of medical ethics at Queen Mary, University of London, is a euthanasia advocate and has said that "involuntary euthanasia" should be permitted. He has advocated changing British law to allow doctors in some cases to end patients' lives "swiftly, humanely and without guilt," even if they have not given consent. However, Irish law currently defines the taking of another person's life without their consent as "murder," as do most, if not all, other jurisdictions in the world.

Doyal was scheduled to speak at the hospital at the invitation of the CUH Ethics Forum, but the lecture was pre-empted when angry protesters filled the room and charged him with attempting to introduce Nazi-style eugenics and to undermine Irish law and constitutional protections. The protest occurred only after numerous complaints to the hospital were ignored.

The lecture hall was filled with protesters who shouted down Doyal until the lecture was called off. A number of protesters, including priests and students from the pro-life action group Youth Defense, accused Doyal of advocating death for helpless ill, elderly and disabled people.

One man, Kieran O'Riordan, approached Doyal on the platform and said that he is currently caring for his wife who has terminal cancer. He held a copy of the constitution of the Republic of Ireland, the preamble of which protects the right to life, and denounced Doyal's speech as a criminal offense and against the law.

Fr. Paul Kramer, a Catholic priest and author, confronted Doyal, shouting, "Nazi criminal! Get out of our country! Nazi eugenicist! Get out of our country!" He turned to the crowd of about 200 and announced, "We say no to Nazi eugenics." The crowd chanted "Out! Out! Out!"

At that point, Professor Doyal was escorted from the room and the lecture was cancelled. . .

Letter Reveals another $200,000 Donation from Tiller for Sebelius

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 16, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A second financial revelation has cast further doubt on Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' representation to the Senate Finance Committee of the nature of her relationship with late-term abortionist George Tiller.

Chuck Colson: Survival of the Fittest - The Abortion Movement Shows Its True Colors

The story is heartbreaking. A woman showed up at an abortion clinic “in flip-flops and in tears,” having walked for an hour to have her fourth child aborted after her boyfriend lost his job. “‘This was a desired pregnancy—she’d been getting prenatal care—but they re-evaluated expenses and decided not to continue,’ said Dr. Pratima Grupta,” in the Associated Press report.

Yes, it’s a heartbreaking story. But columnist Bonnie Erbe sees it quite differently. “In the long run,” she asks, “can we agree that this unwed couple’s decision not to bring a fourth child into the world when they are having trouble feeding themselves and three children is no tragedy?”

After a brief analysis of the expenses of raising a child, Erbe then reiterates that their “fact-based, rational decision” is “no tragedy: it’s a good decision.” In fact, she believes, we’d all be better off if we could recapture the national mood we had just after Roe v. Wade, when abortion “was not something women whined about publicly on the scale many seem to now.” Unbelievable! It’s as if abortion is a good thing. . .
