Notre Dame’s invitation to Obama: The beginning of an American Catholic Church schism?
The Collins Report ^ | March 31, 2009 | Kevin “Coach” Collins

Posted on 03/31/2009 6:04:48 AM PDT by jmaroneps37

As children in Catholic grade schools we were taught the word “schism.”

Schisms were explained as splits in the Catholic Church which were sad but necessary evolutions occurring because not all Catholics could be expected to remain loyal to Roman Catholic doctrine.

The major schism in Church history occurred about 1050 AD, and brought about the Eastern Orthodox Churches.

When Luther and Henry brought about their schisms the Catholic Church was disappointed, but survived and moved on.

Given the steady decline in the number of “Catholic” Catholic colleges in America and the growing hostility toward Catholic doctrine at so many “Catholic” schools the stage may be set for an American schism.

The original aims and purpose of a Catholic education have been so subverted at so many schools claiming to be Catholic, it’s hard to find at Catholic Catholic college.

This fact begs the question: Why should Catholics support schools whose focus is teaching Catholic doctrine is arcane backwards and even evil?

Simply put: We shouldn’t.

Notre Dame’s invitation to Barack Obama, the most pro death president in history, suggests a de facto schism may already be underway and this could be a good thing.

If “Catholic” schools like Notre Dame don’t want to live Catholicism let them go. Let’s have no more pretenses. Let’s have no more hand wringing alumni moaning as they write another check.

Phony “Catholic” schools are wasting Catholic donations that should instead go to supporting seminaries in countries where the Church is growing.

In our big cities Catholic grammar schools are closing every year because there are no Catholics left to support them. Why should these phony Catholic colleges be exempt from reality? They lick the boots of the secular world let the secular world support them.

If this is a schism so be it.

How else can we view the actions of these phony "Catholic" colleges? They have become centers of hostility toward Catholic doctrine and supporters of enemies of Christianity.

"Fr" Jenkins is taking away ANY Moral Authority the Church had in speaking up for Pro-Life issues. The left will just throw it in our face that "O\Hey, Obama was WELCOMED to Notre Dame, your PRE-EMMINENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL, so STFU".

"Fr" Jenkins has chosen "prestige over TRUTH"......VERY BAD CHOICE.

I’m Catholic and I’d like to know where “these” Catholic colleges are. I’m starting to think that it’s the orthodox Catholics that want the schism while they attempt to take Rome with them. I am far from orthodox. I don’t like the Latin Mass and while I am against abortion, I believe birth control is OK as do millions of other Catholics in the US.

The beginning of an American Catholic Church schism?

The CINO’s should take their liberation theology and humanistic philosophies and go join their natural allies in the Unitarian Church.

Leave us traditionalists alone.

“The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

Let's face it, certain elements of the the Church in America have been in de facto schism for nearly a century. They're generally the ones who refer to the 'American' Catholic Church. I say let them go. Cut the cord. The Church is damaged and scandalized by lesbian nuns supporting communists and communist priests supporting liberation theology and radical secular colleges and universities abusing the idea of their Catholic Chrisms. LET THEM GO. Make them go if need be!

Nonsense. True schisms require the actions of bishops, and although we have some wretched bishops in America, none are currently of a schismatic bent.

There will continue to be a fight for a truly Catholic identity, particularly at universities, but within the Church those who disagree will simply leave, as they are doing already. The Church will get smaller and more faithful as cultural Catholics drift away.

Let ‘em go. Huge numbers of “Catholics” don’t matter when half of them are so bone-stupid about the faith that they voted for Obama. If we shrunk by the number of “Catholic” Obama voters, the media would consider it some major sign of a Church in collapse.

I’d consider it a blessing and a sign that we’re doing something right.

What about abortifacient birth control?

You've contradicted yourself. Truth isn't determined by popular vote and you aren't a Catholic. You're a moral relativist protestant masquerading as a Catholic.

Nothing could be more inappropriate for a school named for the Blessed Virgin than the erstwhile support of a man than would literally strangle a newborn.

Notre Dame should change it's name to Newborn Death.

Beginnings of a schism? Yeah, fags on one side, the rest of us on the other. Fine with me. Let’s see how much ends up in the collection plate for the fruits and the liberals who have infected this institution.

The “schism” began a long time ago....with some Catholics, with Vatican II. But you are right, Notre Dame is being incredibly disingenuous and I hope receives a very strong censure or more from the Vatican.

Umm........my understanding is the Catholic Church (I am Catholic) is not against birth control - they are against ARTIFICIAL means of contraception. NFP, which is considerably more sophisticated these days than the “rythmn” method, is perfectly acceptable - and by the way, done properly, works.

You, and they, are rejecting the teaching of the Church.

Been to a lot of Latin masses? How fortunate. Most Catholics who want one have to drive for hours.

You are no Catholic either. You, of all people, do not define the Catholic Church.

Could you please tell me what NFP stands for? That way I can do a websearch to learn more about it.

Thanks.

NFP stands for Natural Family Planning. It’s a natural method of contraception, having the woman take her temperature first thing in the AM even before rising from bed, and keeping a graph. Ovulation can be predicted with this method, and the couple simply abstains during this time. There are various methods actually, that’s just one. Keep in mind, even NOT using birth control, a couple’s chance of conception is only about 10% in any given month. Additionally, not even the pill is 100% effective. So - why mess up your body with chemicals? I have known a couple of women who’s fallopian tubes grew back together after sterilization and they found out because - surprise! - they got pregnant! There are various tools to use along with NFP available thru the world - I don’t think you can get them here simply because Planned Parenthood wants to push the pill. Of course, our government’s objective here is control over family size. Obama doesn’t want you to have more than 2 kids.......
