For a youthful president, he seems to have a low energy level. He remarked on the campaign trail that he was tired.
I feel in my gut he won't last the full four years.
You might also check into a reverse mortgage. Sometimes these make good sense - keeps you in your house but frees up cash. Doesn’t work if you had your heart set on leaving the house to the kids.
If you dump a lot of your savings into your mortgage, you will run through it much faster.
There is one consideration: how much interest are you paying right now? If you have less than 10 years left on your mortgage, you are paying much less interest per month than you were paying at the beginning of the loan.
On the other hand, if you have more than 20 years left, just paying an extra monthly payment per year (i.e. 13 payments of $1000, rather than 12 payments of $1000) will shorten the mortgage considerably. That will save you money in the long run, by reducing your total interest payments.
The key is to make those extra payments early. But as you approach the end of the loan, there's not much point in dumping cash into it unless you have spare cash. It sounds like you don't.

I know it’s late and most have probably gone to bed. But maybe someone has noticed this. Everytime Obama is on TV it looks like he has blue or purple eyelids. I have seen other videos of him and that does not show. But tonight it was noticable, and his lips looked darker than usual. Is he getting bad makeup or what? Is he borrowing Michelle’s makeup and eye shadow? Sure looks strange.
His suit jacket was slopply - nor buttoned properly - sleeves were uneven, etc

Watched the local 10 pm news on CBS affiliate. They showed the side angle of The O at the presser, but CBS had cut off the left port of the screen — that would have shown the large-screen teleprompter.
According to 0bama, you should give to charity for the purpose of giving to charity, not for tax breaks. Stop worrying about your deductions and give to charity. Or in other words, give more to 0bama’s charity, the government. There, that’s your tax incentive.

Just a little side question, because it niggles in the back of my memory. What made the most sense in the last “great depression”, and how is it different from the one we are now facing?
Did it make more sense to pay off the mortgage back then, or keep it? Did folks have mortgages back then the way we do now. I think ours is about 10 years into a 30 year contract.
And, I am trying to figure out whether we are going to have a massive deflation, inflation, or stagflation. We both know how to live very “low on the hog”, have food stored, have a wood-burning stove, don’t mind oil lamps, know how to bake, sew, garden, etc. We are frugal, but no longer trust the .gov, the banks, etc.
Security, so we do not have to bother our children is our highest priority. It occurs to me that Social Security is at risk, as is Medicare.
We are so relieved to no longer have to pay close to 1K a month for health insurance, but we are not dumb enough to think that our children should have to pay that tax burden, which is how it will work out if the present structure continues.
The alternative is pretty bleak. And, I truly think we will be facing that by fall or the middle of the summer of 2010.

If that is true it adds to both the weirdness and the sense that Obama is not handling the pressure well. I can’t comment, though, because I didn’t watch it. I just couldn’t put myself through it. I did catch part of the liveblog at Ace of Spades HQ. One of the guys was pretending to be Peggy Noonan and one was pretending to be Christopher Buckley. It was VERY funny, if a little off color at times.
