WASHINGTON — The Obama administration plans to send reinforcements to the Southwest border to help contain the rampant violence of the Mexican drug cartel wars.

Thirty-seven agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are being deployed to the region. An official familiar with the plan said the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency is considering reassignment of at least 90 officers to the border.

The official requested anonymity because the plan has not yet been announced.

If I smoked, I would be looked for an Indian tribe to adopt me! The existence of the ATF offers interesting insights to those who are preaching that legalizing drugs would solve all the problems on our southern border, just like it solved all the problems of prohibition.

The front line on the border isn’t the DEA, it is the Border Patrol, which makes the vast majority of drug seizures. That is to say, nothing the BO administration is doing will address the actual problem.

The ATF is being sent, to track down gun sales at the border!

No, the ATF is being sent to gin up some stories of gun trafficing and some nice footage of ATF agents 'finding' assault weapons bound for Mexico. All so they can drum up support for another AWB.

So what do you believe is the “actual problem”? If CBP is intercepting so much contraband, why are the prices dropping? ATF is very active in Mexico. They provide “tips” regarding smuggling operations. This information is paid for. The competing suppliers rat out a small percentage of each others’ operation. The corruption, bribes, and payoffs are rampant within the Mexican AND US agencies. To pretend otherwise is naive.
Please enlighten everyone as to the actual problem, and the solution that keeps liberty intact.

The good news is that the move will keep a few dozen jack-booted thugs out of OUR hair for a time and give them something IMPORTANT to do — unless, of course, they stay on our side of the border going house to house confiscating the weapons of the ranchers who have been doing the job the government won’t do.

Yep, BATFE is great at arranging all the "ugly" firearms on an evidence table for maximum effect on the hoplophobes. The number of agents deployed is probably based on the number of FFL holders they intend to persecute.

Kinda makes you conflicted over who you’d wanna see win. Maybe they’ll “cancel” each other out and we’ll get rid of BOTH!!!

That and a variety of charges re: the kids. None of which were proven out in a Court of Law.

The actual problem is still people and contraband coming across the U.S. border illegally, and the potential for the widespread narco violence that has overtaken Mexico becoming a way of life in U.S. cities. My solution would be more and better border fence, armed with an alarm system, enough manpower stationed right there on the border (right now there are fewer than 20,000), at the ports of entry, along the fence line within sight of each other, at the places where the fence ends, some Apache helicopters, a one-hundredfold increase in the number of unmanned surveillance aircraft patrolling over the southern border and the arming of those flights, bigger and better weapons for those patrolling the border including rocket launchers, shoot on sight orders for those patrolling the border who encounter drug smugglers...I could go on. I have no doubt that ATF is providing valuable intelligence about narco activities. Nor do I doubt that there is corruption within the U.S. agencies, though not nearly to the extent it exists in Mexico. A real border crackdown would go a long way, and I don’t see it impinging on my liberty, or the liberty of any other law abiding person in the U.S. If we could defeat Hitler and the Japanese, surely we can defend our own border. The problem is a lack of will and a disinclination to implement a winning strategy. (And according to to DOJ, prices are dropping in some places for some drugs, rising in others.)

Allow property owners along the border to defend their property. With force if necessary.

The problem would go away inside 6 months.

If only. Instead they get sued by MALDEF and lose everything. and are prosecuted by DOJ.
