Ed Rendell/Bob Casey try to get Specter to switch sides

Dems woo Specter with talk of a cleared field Total People in Discussion: 0

Posted by Josh Drobnyk at 1:45:41 PM on March 16, 2009 Gov. Ed Rendell says he, Sen. Bob Casey and Vice President Joe Biden have all talked with Sen. Arlen Specter about switching parties, but the five-term Republican isn't budging.

In an interview with New York-based RNN-TV, Rendell was asked about the speculation that Specter might jump to the Democrats given the tough fight ahead in the GOP primary.

"We've tried," Rendell said. "Myself, Senator Casey, Vice President Biden have tried to talk him into it, but he's bound and determined to stay a Republican. He doesn’t want to see Republican moderates vanish from the Earth. And you know what, he is probably right."

If he were to decide otherwise, Rendell indicated Democrats would clear the field for him.

“He’d be unopposed," Rendell said. "The Democrats in the Senate would welcome him. We in Pennsylvania would welcome him. I think he’d be basically unopposed for the Democratic nomination and I think he’d win 60-65 percent of the vote in the general election."

I wish he would.

His being a Republican gives Obama “bi-partisan cover”

When Benedict Arlen is being pushed this hard by our resident Crook and Mime, you know he is really a RAT at heart.

If he loses the primary he’s likely to switch - unless he just wants to quit.

None of these folks has the power to stop another Dem from running.

They can starve the other Democrats, but they can not tell them what to do.

He might as well switch sides. At least he would be true to his ideas and voting record. Maybe then he can stop dragging down that R at the end of his name.

Here's what Specter's up to...

Kerry changes his tune (and Specter asking pols for open primary; he's worried)

"His being a Republican gives Obama “bi-partisan cover”

I usually fall in the "a liberal Republican in liberal state is better than liberal democrat in a liberal state" camp. But, I think your point about "bi-partisan" cover is well taken.

Sadly, PA has gone the way of it's NE corridor neighbors. And has probably been lost to conservatives for the next generation. I don't like it, but that's the reality. It may be best to run hard-core conservatives against libs in these states even though they have NO CHANCE of winning. The stark contrast between candidates could help in the long term.

“He doesn’t want to see Republican moderates vanish from the Earth.”

Well, we would love to see all RINOs ejected from the GOP. Specter is a traitor and has no place in the Republican Party.

I hope and pray that Pat Toomey blows Specter out of the water in the primary next year!

We need to call on the PA GOP to completely abandon Specter and rally around Toomey.

Pat Toomey vs. Arlen Specter, IN THE GENERAL(!), would be a wonderful thing. Bring It On.

Let him cross over. Keep the PA primary closed.
