I'm pleased to see your post above about the Stamp Act and others that were imposed on the colonies which led to the Revolution. You didn't mention they were called the Intolerable Acts, which also called for British troops to be quartered in American homes, seizure of properties (whaling ships, in my family's case) and conscription at sea of ship's crew members.

My family was loyal to the Crown like Benjamin Franklin till the coercive acts turned them, enraged them having had to hand over property, business and wealth in exchange for a piece of paper that meant 'Start over'.

You know what I had completely forgotten about until I saw that History Channel Special tonight? Franklin's own son was the King's appointed Governor of NJ, and try as he might, Ben was unable to convert him to patriotism versus loyalty to the King...Ben Franklin had to separate himself from his son's loyalties to do what he did...Geez, what a personal sacrifice...how heavy would that weigh on your heart?
