Income taxes in Illinois could soon be going up by as much as 50 percent to combat deficits in a difficult state budget.

As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, Gov. Pat Quinn is reportedly considering raising taxes to deal with a growing budget deficit.

Quinn has been hinting about the problems in the state budget this year for some time. He gives his first address on the subject next Wednesday, and there is word that income taxes will go up as 50 percent.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Quinn wants to raise the state income tax to 4.5 percent from 3 percent.

State lawmakers are also talking about raising gasoline taxes to pay for road and bridge construction. Fees on driver's licenses and license plate stickers may also go up.

In Schaumburg, a NW suburb, stop at McD's and get a Coke, 11% tax.

6 miles north in Lake County 6%.

If you can see Illinois in your rearview mirror, you’re still too close.

‘Illinois looks wonderful in the rear view mirror’...then the tax evacuees move to my state (VA) or yours and vote for the same type of thieves who ruined their blue state.

This is so ironic. Yes, let's tax the mean old smokers to the hilt because they have a nasty habit.

So the mean old smokers quit and oops there goes the revenue.

So they'll have to just tax everybody now to make up the difference.

I think the smokers warned all the non-smokers long ago that this would happen so we don't wanna hear y'all whining about it.

And just think, the new 2200% federal tax increase on tobacco won’t hit till April 1st. I wonder how people will react when the tax on a big mac jumps by 2200%?

A number of years back, when they opened up the first 355 extension from Army Trail Rd. - South, it was only 2 lanes wide, each way. I was absolutely dumbfounded at the stupidity. 3 or 4 years later, 355 was all torn up widening to 3 lanes.

*** How much is the sales tax in Illinois these days? When I left there 30 years ago the sales tax was 5%.*** No fair, that's a trick question.

It all depends on 'where* in IL you are.
Unlike 30 years ago when you fled (lucky dog) now every county, town, village, and/or city has their own taxes to add on top.

Bottom line - Chicago is the highest as they have the Cook County Sales Tax as the starting point. And Cook County now has the highest Sales tax in North America.

I'd give you a link to the IL Dept of Treasury but trying to find anything there is like wandering the Sahara Desert. ( A while back I tried to find the base IL sales tax I pay and couldn't)

Yep, the politicians are beginning to figure out that their taxing of cigarettes as much as they can is backfiring since alot of smokers are just saying this isn't worth it and quitting.

So, already they have spoken of taxing fattening foods which, again smokers warned anybody who would listen would happen.

On the other hand, a side effect of this recession/depression is that the obesity rate may drop.

My wife's friend was going to vote for Democrats last fall. Her daughter and I talked her into McCain. She is happy now she voted that way. She works several jobs trying to make a living so she rolls her own cigarettes. Boy is she mad now that the Democrats raised her tobacco from $9.99 to over $34 per bag.

Remember no tax hike on ANYONE making less than $250,000. Another LIE!

DEMOCRAT = LIES!!!

It really galls me that the government simply assumes that YOU can do with less, but that they cannot.

Schizophrenic policies. Taxing tobacco to pay for SCHIP is a situation designed to fail. On one hand they’re taxing people into quitting while they’re allowing the FDA to regulate tobacco companies out of existence. The end result is an underfunded SCHIP.
