Income taxes in Illinois could soon be going up by as much as 50 percent to combat deficits in a difficult state budget.
As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, Gov. Pat Quinn is reportedly considering raising taxes to deal with a growing budget deficit.
Quinn has been hinting about the problems in the state budget this year for some time. He gives his first address on the subject next Wednesday, and there is word that income taxes will go up as 50 percent.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Quinn wants to raise the state income tax to 4.5 percent from 3 percent.

State lawmakers are also talking about raising gasoline taxes to pay for road and bridge construction. Fees on driver's licenses and license plate stickers may also go up.

Change you can believe in!
Do tell.
Sounds like the beginning to the next American Pie movie.
How much is the sales tax in Illinois these days? When I left there 30 years ago the sales tax was 5%. You all are fast approaching California’s punitive taxation level. Our sales tax has just been raised to 9.25%. Our license fees have just doubled. Nobody yet is talking about the size of increase in our state income tax but I bet it’s a doozy!
Currently IL does not tax retirement earnings and 401k distributions. I wonder if that will change?............
Not sure, but between personal and corporate, real estate
and the rest...Illinois is killing my bottom line. If they can tax it they will.
It’s 10.25% in the city of Chicago.
Yikes! Amazing factoid in the article—the GOP has not gotten one Republican elected to countywide office in 17 years!
My (very) liberal sister was visiting from Chicago (she’s the only enlightened urbanite among us) and I asked her what the parking sticker was for (you know, the kind that college campuses use). For a fee, you could buy a sticker from the city that allowed you to park your car on the street. “Why?” I asked.
sister: “Because the city paid to pave the street and you are using it.”
me: “But aren’t gasoline taxes used for that?”
sister: “Well, yeah, but they have to remove snow, too.”
me: “So you don’t have any problem with paying the city for the privilege of parking on streets that you already paid for paving and clearing of snow?”
sister: “No.”
me: “Okay.”
Expect city income taxes to go up shortly, too. Between Fed, State, and local taxes all taxing the “rich,” small business is going to get killed. The ultimate irony is that both my (very) liberal sister and her husband work for small businesses and their jobs are in the crosshairs. Of course it will be Bush’s fault.
hh
You are absolutely right. TEN percent!
We drive to Lake county routinely to buy ANYTHING.
Absolute craven idiots!
I guess that is their reward for giving us zero.
No.
What brand was the guitar?
If it was a Fender© she should get life.
;-)
That’s because the chairman’s busy playing Guitar Hero. LOL
Hey Gov. Quinn...Michigan increased our income tax rate from 3.9% to 4.35%.
Hey, if you want to beat our 11.6% unemployment rate too, go for it!
Democrat run, Democrat ruined.
Illinois, Taxifornia, Michigan...need I go on?
Actually that's not a 'parking sticker'. That's a City of Chicago 'vehicle registration license' (Tax). Its like a state license plate(s). And its been required in Chi, 'forever'. You own a car, you get a City Sticker, or get ticketed when a Cop runs your plate and see you live in Chi.
And its not only Chi that requires one. Most towns and villages in IL require them (vehicle registration tax). My *little* Village used to also - $12.00 per car. BUT, we are/became fiscally sound and haven't needed one in well over a decade as the village no longer needs the money (We can still get a Commemorative Village Sticker for $1.00 if we like, but don't - nobody does that I know of).
Yes, indeed. My only fear is that the idiots will move out of state and bring their Marxist voting patterns with them.
That sales pitch is the most popular and reliable political scam there is. Politicians have no intention to fix the roads because it's their guaranteed way to repeatedly pass new taxes and bonds that eventually get redirected into the general fund. The sheeple never figure out this scam for some reason, proof you can fool some of the people all of the time.
It’s all Bush’s fault, he never should have given those tax cuts. Now the Liberals have no choice but make up the losses. (of course, /s)
