California Democrat Has Championed Minority-Owned OneUnited on Capitol Hill and Criticized Its Government Regulators
When Rep. Barney Frank was looking to aid a Boston-based lender last fall, the Massachusetts Democrat urged Maxine Waters, a colleague on the House Financial Services Committee, to "stay out of it," he says.
The reason: Ms. Waters, a longtime congresswoman from California, had close ties to the minority-owned institution, OneUnited Bank.
Ms. Waters and her husband have both held financial stakes in the bank. Until recently, her husband was a director. At the same time, Ms. Waters has publicly boosted OneUnited's executives and criticized its government regulators during congressional hearings. Last fall, she helped secure the bank a meeting with Treasury officials.
Her involvement isn't new. Ms. Waters has detailed her financial ties in a series of federal disclosure forms and has been vocal in public in support of the bank. Those ties, however, have received little public attention. Nor is it well known how the influential lawmaker has over the years acted to support the bank and its executives.
Such potential conflicts of interest are more serious as the banking system's crisis has led the government to take an increasingly active role in overseeing financial institutions, including OneUnited. The financial-services committee on which Ms. Waters sits oversees banking issues, and the lawmaker is a potential future chairman.
Representatives of the bank and Ms. Waters didn't return calls seeking comment. Ms. Waters's congressional staff didn't respond to written questions about her and her husband's relationship with the bank.

Talk about lip stick on a pig!
There was plenty of lipstick on that Porkulus bill...
So Maxine Waters is on the House Financial Services Committee and her husband is a director for a bank they are both invested in.
No conflict of interest there...
Washington is a cesspool.
DEMS are not a “new mob”, they are an “old mob”. They are organized like mafia - they are, after all, in “minority protection” racket - with the unions and “activists” / “organizers” as an enforcement arm.
And they practically own legal system, propaganda and all levels of brainwashing institutions (K-U), and quite a large segment of financial industry...
NO, it is stupid AMERICAN VOTERS that put them there. It starts with a vote.
Term Limits Now!!!
Why no one is talking about this is beyond me.
One big difference:
The Mafia at least had a code of honor.....
Black Congressperson
Belongs to and leads Congressional Black Caucus
Keep her money in a black bank where her husband is a director.
But she isnt racist.
POLITICIANS....GRRRRRR
In today’s political environment, corruption is defined by the media, and it’s defined solely as being of the wrong political affiliation. Period.
All I want to know is HOW this foolish woman got to the point she is? She’s an idiot.
It's the people who keep electing her who are truly idiots, if they think that she and her ilk have their best interests in mind.
Well said.
Democrats cannot commit moral turpitude because they are at the start a-moral, having no values other than empowering their political capital. Maxine is a piece of commie entitlement work. She’s so powerful now, she can threaten the oil industry that she and her demcorat party will take over the oil industry if they don’t do as she tells them.
“ms” Waters is also a viscous attack dog when it comes to defending ACORN and Fannie and Freddie. ANY time there’s anything going on remotely touching on ACORN, Fannie n Freddie, that CBC biotch is right up there in it. I dare say “Ms.” Waters is as corrupt as Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Not to mention she is PART of a system that has beggared people she says she was trying to help and she ACTIVELY assists in keeping Black people both ignorant and dependent on Government. All so she can stay in her cushy Congressional Position.
If I were one of her black supporters I would be out to smack that evil twit right the heck out of congress for her betrayal of the Black American Community.
Is that a strong enough condemnation?
