HARRISBURG, Pa. – The nation is on the "brink of a depression," but there's a "reasonable chance" that the $787 billion economic stimulus package will help ease the situation, Sen. Arlen Specter said Monday.

Specter, R-Pa., said the nation's economic situation is more dire than the public has been told, but did not elaborate.

"Our economic problems are enormously serious — more serious than is publicly disclosed. And I think we're on the brink of a depression," he told reporters at the state Capitol.

The retired parents of some friends of mine are moving in with them. They’ve lost more than half of their retirement.

more serious than is publicly disclosed

Market going down again tomorrow.... how about you elite assh*les disclosing the truth. We can take it because we have more brains than any of you critters.

Sheesh. You'd think they were concealing Area 51 aliens or something... They can't disclose because "the people" would freak out... Well, Spincter, the market is freaking out and y'all shouldn't be too thrilled about your prospects for reelection...

""Had there been no stimulus, I think we'd have gone right off the edge," he said. "I think we're pretty close to the edge anyway, to be very brutally blunt about it."

Nice try with the "CYA" approach, Arlen. You are pathetic.

Pray tell, Mr. Sphincter how billions in pork, and billions in dollars that won’t be spent for a few years is going to head off a depression. I’d like to know from which economic school this theory was derived.

The K-Y Jelly school of economic stimulation...

"... if prices start to rise before a recovery begins..

Oh God, that is rich. That is ENTIRELY what the gooberment has been trying to do, raise house, stock, share, commodity prices. Right this minute. Of course prices are going to rise, way way before the 'recovery'. This is what is going to pull the financial chestnuts out of the fire. (Naturally poor, working, modest income people will have to take it in the neck, but frankly, what are the masses good for if not dumping a big steaming pile of tax, price, debt crap upon?)

LOL! For some reason this strikes me along the lines of when Rush whispers to a caller, telling him, "Now don't tell anybody this, just keep it between you and me..."

This geezer is a joke.

It was disclosed in secret, but Americans weren’t given opportunity to get their money out...but Congress’s money was taken out of banks in time, no doubt:

“I think we’re pretty close to the edge anyway, to be very brutally blunt about it.”

And he’s probably right....
The only ways out of a Recession/Depression is innovation and production, BOTH of which have been almost eliminated in America thanks to Democrat policy.

Livonia, Phillipps, and Halcion have all closed LIGHT BULB plants across America ahead of new regs REQUIRING mercury-filled light-bulbs. The potential enviro liability in America is just too great to manufacture them here anymore.

And that is just ONE example.

In the 1970s we had stagflation where the GDP was flat and inflation was soaring to new heights. The inflation was triggered by (a) OPEC oil pricing and/or (b) 15 years of spending on Viet Nam and The Great Society. If we have an oil spike now, we are toast. Oil touched $50 today and I'll bet America's enemies understand how to take us and the UK out for good. Watch oil.

One could argue that oil is down because of the global recession. Or, one could argue that Oil is a deflation beater like it was last summer at $145 or, one could argue that there isn't enough money left in the world to fiddle with oil prices at all, or, one could just argue!

Has anyone calculated the average IQ of Congress? Maybe broken down by chamber? This would be helpful information.
