Where's global warming?
Boston Globe ^ | March 8, 2009 | Jeff Jacoby

SUPPOSE the climate landscape in recent weeks looked something like this:

Half the country was experiencing its mildest winter in years, with no sign of snow in many Northern states. Most of the Great Lakes were ice-free. Not a single Canadian province had had a white Christmas. There was a new study discussing a mysterious surge in global temperatures - a warming trend more intense than computer models had predicted. Other scientists admitted that, because of a bug in satellite sensors, they had been vastly overestimating the extent of Arctic sea ice.

If all that were happening on the climate-change front, do you think you'd be hearing about it on the news? Seeing it on Page 1 of your daily paper? Would politicians be exclaiming that global warming was even more of a crisis than they'd thought? Would environmentalists be skewering global-warming "deniers" for clinging to their skepticism despite the growing case against it?

No doubt.

But it isn't such hints of a planetary warming trend that have been piling up in profusion lately. Just the opposite.

The United States has shivered through an unusually severe winter, with snow falling in such unlikely destinations as New Orleans, Las Vegas, Alabama, and Georgia. On Dec. 25, every Canadian province woke up to a white Christmas, something that hadn't happened in 37 years. Earlier this year, Europe was gripped by such a killing cold wave that trains were shut down in the French Riviera and chimpanzees in the Rome Zoo had to be plied with hot tea. Last week, satellite data showed three of the Great Lakes - Erie, Superior, and Huron - almost completely frozen over. In Washington, D.C., what was supposed to be a massive rally against global warming was upstaged by the heaviest snowfall of the season, which paralyzed...

Tagline noted. These are not my facts, they belong to climate scientists, the REAL ones.

According to them, CO2 levels have been increasing for over 500 years, which predates the industrial age and it's burning of sequestered CO2.

What "climate change/global warming" zealots claim is that Man has the power to change the weather, and on that, I call B*LL$H*T! Man has yet to understand the weather, much less change it....

So how much is there, as a percentage?

Crickets chirping as you look it up, afraid to speak the truth...BUMP!

Crickets chirping as you look it up, afraid to speak the truth.

At whatever level they state it is (I'll use 380 ppm), current levels as a percentage is about 0.04%.

As a reference, the atmosphere is about 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, 1% argon, and 1% of everything else, including CO2....

Everything else also includes neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, ozone, and ammonia....

DING DING DING! We have a winner.

(although I wanted palmer to admit it)

.034% is only .034% more than ZERO!

Zero, also known as: nothing, zip, zero, nada.

It's the second strongest greenhouse gas. Ozone is the third strongest. All the rest are also-rans. The water vapor that does the bulk of the warming would not be possible without CO2.

Ozone is NOT third, it is fourth.

The "greenhouse gases" are (in order and strength):
Water vapor 35-70%,
CO2 9-26% (I guess that depends on whether Algore is speaking that day),
Methane 4-9% (Depends on whether Big Al had a double chili burrito before speaking),
ozone 3-7% (Upper level ozone is produced by the sun)....

I may not be a "scientist", but I did study chemistry in school.

Unlike a certain divinity school flunkie who's a former VP and global warming activist....

Well, I must be off. I have to put a timing chain on my car.

I can’t afford $10,000+ for a “new” ride, but a $30.00 timing chain will keep my 200k+ mileage, 1980 Malibu running until the Obamanation in the White House is gone....

It is SO IMPORTANT for conservatives to understand to NEVER DENY global warming. That is a loser argument. Because global warming has happened before....albeit by nature.
The correct argument is “it is not man made”. The best proof is ending of last ice age due to massive global warming long before man had invented on demand fire.

Sorry for shouting but this is critical.

It’s both. Any increase in CO2 will increase temperature (simple physics). Most increases in temperature will bring out more CO2 from the oceans. The 500-800 lag is based on extremely crude ice core measurements (about one measurement for every few hundred years). I wouldn’t read too much into it.

CO2 9-26% (I guess that depends on whether Algore is speaking that day),

Ranges depend on the spectral overlap. The issue of whether doubling CO2 causes catastrophic warming or not depends on that overlap plus the changes in weather that may occur at higher temperatures. Because of the overlap with H2O, the doubling of CO2 creates about a 0.25C temperature rise, not catastrophic. Factoring in weather changes, there may be a rise in the height of the troposphere or other changes that cause warming. Real world measurements are not conclusive but it is doubtful that there would be enough positive feedback to be considered catastrophic.

The academics is interesting, but the alarmism is both juvenile and fraudulent, even criminal.

There is nothing man can or should do other than be aware. Just like incoming meteors.

true, except we’ll have plenty of time to adjust if necessary (unlike a meteor).
