Alicia Garcia’s father was serving in Iraq, and her letter asks Obama to “please send my dad home.” But even before the letter started making its way to the White House, the girl’s family received word that her dad would return this month. The news has cemented the fourth-grader’s faith in the new president.
“My dad’s coming home,” she said solemnly. “I think it’s because Obama won.”

President Obama told Americans to take a look at investing in the stock market this afternoon, a remarkable utterance for an American president, especially as the Dow Jones Industrial Average proceeds on its course Southward.
“What you’re now seeing is ... profit and earning ratios are starting to get to the point where buying stocks is a potentially good deal if you’ve got a long-term perspective on it,” the president said on a day that trading continued to hover under 7,000.
The president predicted that Americans’ consumer confidence would improve as they see the stimulus bill “taking root.”
“Businesses are starting to see opportunities for investment and potential hiring,” he said. “We are going to start creating jobs again.”

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama’s top economic officials on Tuesday vigorously defended tax hikes in the administration’s $3.6 trillion budget against Republican claims that they would affect nearly all Americans.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and White House Budget Director Peter Orszag, in separate appearances on Capitol Hill, stuck to the administration line that the president’s budget would benefit 95 percent of working Americans.
Higher taxes for affluent Americans would not come until 2011 once “we are safely into recovery,” Geithner told the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.
“I’m confident this is the right path for the country,” Geithner said.
