Cantor Rejects Rush Limbaugh Rhetoric
ABC News ^ | 03/01/09

Posted on 03/01/2009 11:30:09 AM PST by cc2k

During our exclusive interview on "This Week," Republican Whip Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., rejected comments made by Rush Limbaugh at the CPAC conference.

<Snip> Limbaugh said Saturday to the conservative conference, "What is so strange about being honest and saying I want Barack Obama to fail if his mission is to restructure and reform this country so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundations?"

Cantor today rejected Limbaugh's rhetoric.

"So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the president fails is not the Eric Cantor, House Republican approach?" I asked.

"Absolutely not," Cantor said. "And I don't -- I don't think anyone wants anything to fail right now. We have such challenges. What we need to do is we need to put forth solutions to the problems that real families are facing today."

“...this is exactly the kind of trap question that Republicans always have to be on the alert for.”

True! BUT....I think he may not have understood what Rush actually said in context and only heard Democrat idiots bashing Rush as a person who wants Obama to fail.

Why bother with the Obamaloons, it’s a waste of time.

What’s even better is when Obama looks you in the eye and lies. Why don’t the Obamaloons talk about that?

Frankly I hope that Obama falls on his face and takes the Obamaloons with him. As for the voters, you can’t fix stupid.

America will be fine.

Here's one of the two money quotes:

Steffy: So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the president fails is not the Eric Cantor/House Republican approach?"

Cantor's answer: "George, absolutely not."

That's not "brushing it off. It's a direct, definitive answer.

That alone is a failure of leadership and a failure of gamesmanship. He is letting the enemy define the debate.

You are wrong my friend. A MAJORITY of the GOP in Congress (as well as Romney and Gingrich) supported the billionaire bailout of the banks in October. By that single act, they made the greatest leap toward socialism in American history up that the time and paved the way for eventual nationalization as well as Obama's stimulus plan.

Sorry, but no. Let's have some perspective here, ok? One bad vote does not automatically turn everybody into a RINO. The same Republicans who went spineless in that vote also held the line on Porkulus, and appear to be holding the line on the subsequent stuff as well.

I believe Cantor felt like he had to brush it off by agreeing that he does not want Obama to fail to avoid being tagged in the press with that label. I also believe that it was a mistake on his part...even though it was a very small part of the interview.

He should have looked straight into Stephanopoulos eyes and said that in as much as any policy or initiative that Obama got behind (like the stimulus package or this budget) dismantled or destroyed our core values of less government, small government, less taxation, or the free market, then yes, we would not only want it to fail, but would work tirelessly on principle to do all in our power to insure it did fail.

That was the answer this bogus question wa begging IMHO.

Damn! This really disappoints me. I’m hoping Cantor’s just telling the MSM what they want to hear, but I guess i’ll have to take a wait & see attitude. Rush sure put a bee in a lot of bonnets last night, didn’t he??? Love that guy!!

Cantor is saying we don’t need failure right now. In his world rooting for failure gets used against him.

I don't think you are correct about Gingrich:

It's a shame I'm not in Congress.

I believe he did brush it off...and it was only a couple od seconds...after which he went on to repeat the core values we support. Like I have said, I also believe it was a mistake. Cantor should have answered on principle ands used the opportunity to nail the post into the ground that those principle we stand for are worth ensuring that the new President fail should he try and attack them directly.

But to characterize the intire interview by that one set-up question is just that...a set up by the drive bys.

Easy for us to say....but this man obviously has a more than hectic schedule and most likely cannot listen to talk radio and/or commentary with any great frequency. At present he has his hands full with this omnibus bill and the new proposed budget....all geared to redistribute wealth....which he mentioned in the interview more than once.

He could have (and IMHO, shjould have) turned it around.

In essense, if the Obama administration efforts are geared towards making the American system as we support it fail, then we will oppose him directly.

That “one bad vote” was the single most important vote in a generation. It was a vote either for or against socialism, in its most obvious form and MOST of the Republicans panicked and voted yes. That was a true test of their character and principles when the chips were down. Can we at least agree that we should rule out for consideration in the 2012 prez race, each and every Republican who voted yes on that bailout?

Great. You can go crawl back under your desk now, Mr. Cantor. The MSM will not threaten you this week with BAAAAAAAD publicity. You have bent over for the left in an appropriate and acceptable manner. Congrats, you spineless wuss.

There is a messaging thing in question here. Does Cantor want to be seen as rooting for the President to fail when what Obama is claiming to be trying to get the US going again? Think politics here.

If Cantor was really trying to support Obama then why did he manage to hold the line on the repubs when they voted in unision to reject Porkulus?
